Calls Armenian Killings “Genocide”

By Harut Sassounian

Israel’s new Ambassador to the United States, Michael B. Oren, is a firm believer in the veracity of the Armenian Genocide, despite his government’s denialist position on this issue.

Prior to his ambassadorial appointment, Oren repeatedly confirmed the facts of the Armenian Genocide in his writings. In the May 10, 2007 issue of the New York Review of Books, he wrote a highly positive review of Taner Akcam’s book: “A Shameful Act: The Armenian Genocide and the Question of Turkish Responsibility.” The review was titled: “The Mass Murder They Still Deny.”

In his most recent book, “Power, Faith and Fantasy,” Oren made dozens of references to Armenia and Armenians, including lengthy heart-wrenching descriptions of the mass killings before and during the Armenian Genocide. Here are some of the most striking quotations from his book:

“The buildup of Ottoman oppression and Armenian anger erupted finally in the spring of 1894, when Turkish troops set out to crush a local rebellion, but then went on to raze entire villages and slaughter all of their inhabitants…. Some 200,000 Armenians died — 20 percent of the population — and a million homes were ransacked. ‘Armenian holocaust,’ cried a New York Times headline in September 1895, employing the word that would later become synonymous with genocide.”

Oren then went on to establish that more than a century ago, similar to today’s acrimonious political tug-of-war over the genocide recognition issue, the Armenian atrocities seriously affected U.S.-Turkish relations. He wrote: “Maintaining amicability with Turkey would prove complicated, however, because ties between the United States and the Porte [Sultan] had long been frayed. The perennial source of friction was the oppression of Armenian Christians. Though a band of modernizing Young Turks, many of them graduates of Roberts College, had achieved power in Istanbul in 1908 and promised equal rights for all of the empire’s citizens, barely a year passed before the slaughter of Armenians resumed. Some thirty thousand of them were butchered by Turkish troops in south-central Anatolia.”

In a section titled, “The most horrible crime in human history,” Oren wrote: “The first reports, from December 1914, told of anti-Christian pogroms in Bitlis, in eastern Turkey, and the hanging of hundreds of Armenians in the streets of Erzerum. Armenian men between the ages of twenty and sixty were being conscripted into forced-labor battalions, building roads, and hauling supplies for the Turkish army. The following month, after their defeat by Russian forces in the Caucasus, Turkish troops salved their humiliation by pillaging Armenian towns and executing their Armenian laborers. In the early spring, Turkish soldiers laid siege to the Armenian city of Van in eastern Anatolia and began the first of innumerable mass deportations. The slaughter then raged westward to Istanbul, where, on April 24, security forces arrested and hanged some 250 Armenian leaders and torched Armenian neighborhoods. Interior Minister Talaat Pasha informed the Armenian Patriarch that ‘there was no room for Christians in Turkey’ and advised him and his parishioners ‘to clear out of the country.’”

Oren then exposed Turkey’s attempts to falsify history by pointing out that: “Most contemporary observers agree that the massacres were scarcely connected to the war, but rather represented a systematically planned and executed program to eliminate an entire people. Indeed, foreshadowing the Nazi genocide of the Jews twenty-five years later, Turkish soldiers herded entire Armenian villages into freezing rivers, incinerated them in burning churches, or simply marched them into the deserts and abandoned them to die of thirst…. By the end of summer, an estimated 800,000 Armenians had been killed and countless others forcibly converted to Islam.”

After citing numerous eyewitness accounts of the mass killings, Oren concluded: “In all, as many as 1.5 million Armenians were killed in a genocide that the Turkish government would never acknowledge, much less regret.”

While it is true that Michael Oren published this book before his assignment as Ambassador to Washington, his compelling position on the Armenian Genocide would hopefully make him refrain from following the footsteps of his predecessors who shamefully lobbied against the congressional resolution on this issue.

The appointment of a staunch supporter of the truth of the Armenian Genocide as Israel’s Ambassador to Washington comes on the heels of a serious rift between Turkey and Israel following the Gaza war earlier this year. On that occasion, there were major manifestations of anti-Semitic statements and acts throughout Turkey, including anti-Israeli remarks by Turkish Prime Minister Rejeb Erdogan. His insulting words to Israel’s President Shimon Peres in Davos, Switzerland, antagonized Israelis and Jews worldwide. Even though Israel downplayed Erdogan’s offensive words, they did a lasting damage to Israeli-Turkish relations.

The combination of an Israeli government that is less sympathetic of Turkey and the presence of Israel’s Ambassador in Washington who is a firm believer in the facts of the Armenian Genocide may facilitate the passage of the pending congressional resolution on the Armenian Genocide.

  1. Except turks all over the World knows that the Armenian massacres in the Ottoman Turkey in 1915-23 were GENOCIDE!!!

The Armenian Genocide is acknowledged by the United Nations, European Parliament, legislatures of more than 20 countries (Uruguay, Russia, France, Canada, Greece etc.), U.S. House of Representatives, Pres. Reagan, 42 out of 50 U.S. States, and the International Association of Genocide Scholars.

Armenians no longer needed to convince the world that what took place during the years 1915-23 was
    “a genocide” It is obvious!!!

ARMENIANS ARE WAITING FOR JUSTICE!!! (Turks have uproot my people from its ancestral homeland!)

ARMENIANS ARE WAITING FOR RETURNING THEIR CONFISCATED LANDS AND PROPERTIES.

    We have obtained ‘Recognition’ !!!

Now we will fight for Reparations’ and the ‘Return’ of our Armenian lands !!!!
    GOD BLESS YOU ARMENIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ANI=RAT,

You’re like the cockroach (cockroachians)…you shamelessly keep hanging around! First of all, the UN never acknowledged the bogus “genocide”! Second, Countries are starting to reverse themselves after hearing the truth and unaltered facts and stating that there never was an Armenian “genocide” (i.e. Sweden)! Third, the IAGS is not a credible organization and is therefore not taken seriously! They admit that the only materials that they have read are the ones provided to them by the dashnak Armenians! They’re even on record as saying that they know very little about this topic! Fourth, WWi ended in 1918. Turkey was in shambles, devided up, destitute, broke, starvation rampant, all weapons confiscated by the allies, numerous soldiers constantly patroling the areas. It wasn’t until 1922 that Ataturk rounded up exhausted rag-tag soldiers, and together won independence and became a Republic! So, between 1918-1923, just who exactly was committing this acts of “genocude” against the Armenians? It sure as hell wasn’t the Turks! How about Space Aliens! By the end of WWI, hundreds of thousands of Armenians were accounted for living in Syria alone! You dashnak Armenians are so full of crap, that you can’t see the ridiculousness of your claims, and how they simply can not be possible logically! But then again, you’ve been doing this con upon the gulible Christian nations for the past century, so why stop now!

Your walls of lies, deception and deceit are beginning to crumble all around you as the world finally starts learning the truth! It’s just a matter of time now!! Then you’ll see justice, but not in the manner that you losers wanted! WE SHALL NEVER FORGET!!!

    Ani,
Well, what can I add that Robert hasnt already humiliated you with?
1915 Galipoli anslaught saw most of the able Ottoman Troops on that border. How could they have been defending the Turkish lands from the largest Naval presence in WORLD HISTORY from entering the Straits and at the same time commiting the so called BS genocide as you idiots claim?
How do you explain that more and more countries are now pushing towards an International Court of Law do decide after an independant commisison of Historians, sholars etc research the topic? I will tell you. This process will releive all other countries from the stress and pressure put on them by the Armenian Politicians and diaspora!
You have enjoyed the last 94 years, but you have come to the end of it.
You will go down in history as a SLANDEROUS, CHEATING, DECEITFUL NATION!

    Ani,
Typicall Armenian tactics… Well done. You prove us right again!!!
Your behaviour is evident all over the web. If you are backed in a corner with logical questions, you start attacking and slandering anywhich way possible.
Hell, on one site, the pittiful armenian was begging the site administrator to block anothers IP address just because the other guy had logical questions and points to make.
    You are a funny lot!

  5. ROBERT & Fahrettin Altay Pasha,

My education doesn’t allow me to call you RATS!

    I pity you !!!

What can we expect from turks with 10 million illiterate people…. 🙁

    I see – no progress..

  6. Robert,

You betray your racism and Genocidal orientation daily. No people are vermin, rats or cockroaches. This is the language of mass killers and Genocide. It is ironic that you use the vocabulary of Sakir, Goebbels and Rosenberg to deny Genocide.

Pasa, the order of battle of the Ottoman formations is well known. It is, for example, widely acknowledged that most of the Army units were not implicated in the 1915 phase of Genocide, including troops under Ataturk. Irregular formations, Gendarmes, released convicts and other paramilitaries formed in 1914 did most of the killing, parallel to how the Wehrmcht, for the most part left the killing to the SS and the reserve police units in the East.

  7. robert,
read the below extract, especially the point 3.

    The Cost of Denial

In my studies of genocide, I have discovered that the process of every genocide has predictable stages. They aren’t linear, because they usually operate simultaneously. But there is a logical order to them, because a “later” stage cannot occur without a logically “prior” stage. It is also useful to distinguish them, because they can help us see when genocide is coming and what governments can do to prevent it.

    1. Classification, when we classify the world into us versus them.

    2. Symbolization, when we give names to those classifications like Jew and Aryan, Hutu and Tutsi, Turk and Armenian. Sometimes the symbols are physical, like the Nazi yellow star.

    3. Dehumanization, when perpetrators call their victims rats, or cockroaches, cancer, or disease; so eliminating them is actually seen as “cleansing” the society, rather than murder.

    4. Organization, when hate groups, armies, and militias organize.

    5. Polarization, when moderates are targeted who could stop the process, especially moderates from the perpetrators’ group.

6.Preparation, when the perpetrators are trained and armed, victims are identified, transported and concentrated.

7.Extermination, what we legally define as genocide, the intentional destruction, in whole or in part, of a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.

8.Denial. It is actually a continuation of the genocide, because it is a continuing attempt to destroy the victim group psychologically and culturally, to deny its members even the memory of the murders of their relatives.

Denial has a profoundly negative impact on everyone concerned.

JDA – Ataturk has nothing to do with you lot during those stages as he was busy trying to stop the invasion of Today’sTurkey. What proof do you have? – NONE!
Secondly, Armenians started to push the “Genocide” lie after Ataturk’s death, this is why you are not able to find any literature or statements from Ataturk on the topic.

    ANI –
To humiliate you again with your points: 🙂
1 – The Armenian Dashnaks started the phsycological Us Vs Them inthe 1850’s
2 – The Armenian Dashnaks (even today) called themselves the pure Aryan race, they had their symbols seen plentiful.
3 – Armenian Dashnaks gangs started cleansing the Muslim, Turkish, Greek, Kurdish and even armenian population from Anatolia. Nothing would stop them from realising their “DREAM” of a greater Armenia.

4 – Armenian Gangs took advantage of the Russian advance, French Advance etc…, formed militia groups and knowing that the majority of the Turkish Troops were at the front fighting for their country, rounded up and killed thousands of Turks. This is widely documented by many foreign ministers and is in archives.
5 – Dashnaks started killing anybody who was in their way. Even armenians who did not agree with their plan!
6 – Thousands of Armenian gangs were trained and armed by the French, Russian and Greeks. The sole intention to revolt against the Turks and kill as many Turks as possible just because they are Turksi. This all happenned between 1870 and 1910. Once again, widely documented.
7 – Hundreads and thousands of Turks (estimates of upto 4 million) were killed by Dashnak armenian gangs during those periods.
8 – All Turks agree many lives were lost on all sides. All Turks also agree the period was a dark time for humanity. Armenians on the other hand are still lead to beleive only armenians were killed and do not acknowledge the deaths of anybody else! Who is in denial???

What you are too stupid to realise is Robert never calls the entire Armenian Population RATS, he just calls you a RAT. Robert never targets the entire Armenian population becasue we all know not all Armenians are, and think like you. I know of many Armenians, some inTurkey, some overseas who do not agree with your chain of thaught. They without being under any pressure what so ever prefer to live in Turkey and openly agree NO GENOCIDE BS took place. They all agree what the Turks did with the Tescit laws was to protect the lives of more innocents. Proof is looking at the Armenian Churches, shools and hospitals in Istanbul. One of my closest friends went to school in Istanbul with three Armenians in the same class. They still (many many years later) are good friends.

    ANI – Answer this question…
How many Armenians cross the border and go to Turkey to work (illegaly) annualy?
Compared to how many Turks go to Armenia for ANY REASON?

Dont just copy and paste what other idiots have written, think about what they mean first! It makes you look like even more of a fool than you already are.

  9. Mr. Fahrettin Altay Pasha,

Following to your logic everybody who know TRUTH about ARMENIAN GENOCIDE and talk about it are idiots???!!! Very, very nice logic, typical turkish logic.

By your logic Mr. Theodore Roosevelt, Mr.Winston Churchill. Mr. Elie Wiesel, Mr. Obama and many thousands people are ideot, just they honest people? Bravo! You are very smart.

You bring the examlpe of your closest friend. I am very happy for him! But at the same time I cannot consider that all turkish people think like Taner Akcham or Orhan Pamuk!!!
    🙂

    ANI,

WHAT?!!! Tell me, do you ever stop to think before you post something? Fahrettin Altay Pasha summed it all up best in his most recent post! You can’t answer any of the questions posed to you by either he or me, so what do you do? You go right back to being idiotic!

    JDA,

I have only one qusetion for you. Did your parents have any children that lived?

Since JDA=ANI=SONA=…=The RAT, we have gone round and round with you. What are you, like seven years old?!! Your antics are truly ludicrous and just makes you, and other dashnaks, look more and more foolish by the minute! Unless you come here and are serious about answering ALL of the questions regarding the various issues posed to you on all of the other site areas by us, I for one, will no longer bother responding to you (it’s like dealing with a small child!). All you’re doing is bringing shame to your people once they’ve seen your posts! L8er loser!!
