Meet the Consul: Murat Lutem , Turkey

The appointment of a country’s first Consul General in Boston is an auspicious occasion for the country and Boston. Just such occasion occurred when Turkey appointed Murat Lütem as Consul General of Turkey in Boston. A career diplomat for nearly 20 years, Consul General Lütem serves as the chief diplomatic representative in Boston of a country of great and growing importance in world affairs.

Murat Lütem was appointed as Consul General of Turkey in Boston in July 2010, the first diplomatic representative of his country in Boston in modern times who was not an Honorary Consul here. A career diplomat serving his country, Murat Lütem, prior to his appointment to serve in Boston was seconded from 2007 to 2010 to the Office of the President of the Republic of Turkey and appointed Foreign Policy Advisor on the President’s staff. In that position, he assisted the Senior Foreign Policy Advisor in information-processing on issues pertaining to the United States, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East, and the Far East. Earlier, he was posted to the Turkish Embassy in Washington D.C. in 2003, where he focused on Turkish-American economic relations, acted as liaison to Turkish-American associations and interacted with members of the U.S. Congress, among other responsibilities. He was seconded to the Office of the President of the Republic of Turkey in 2001 and appointed Deputy Chief of Staff to the President. He was posted to Turkish Embassy in Azerbaijan in 1999 and to the Turkish Embassy in Germany in 1996. He joined the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1993. Mr. Lütem was a Fellow at the Harvard University’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs in 2010 – 2011. He earned a B.A. degree in 1993 from the International Relations Department of the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey.
