The Turkish Coalition of America on Thursday donated $25,000 to Operation Helping Hands — a joint community project of The Miami Herald, el Nuevo Herald and United Way of Miami-Dade.

U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and the president of the Turkish Coalition of America, G. Lincoln McCurdy, attended a ceremony at the Miami History Museum in downtown Miami at which the donation was made.

Operation Helping Hands was established in 1998 after Hurricanes Mitch and George to provide South Florida residents with a way to reach out and help their neighbors in need following the disasters.

This year the organization is focused on helping the people of Haiti after the deadly earthquake in January.
