For Immediate Release

The American-Turkish Council (ATC) and the Turkish-American Business Council (TAIK), organizers of the Annual Conference on United States-Turkey Relations, have announced that the 29th Annual Conference, scheduled for April 11-14, 2010 in Washington, D.C., will not be held as scheduled.

This change is required because of the impossibility of holding the conference as planned. On March 4, the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the U.S. House of Representatives, approved by a one-vote margin, a non-binding resolution directing the President to recognize Armenian “genocide.” In view of this action, Turkish authorities recalled Turkey’s ambassador to the United States, curtailed official visits to countries that have accepted claims of genocide, including the United States, and advised public and private sector businesses and business associations of this policy.

While expressing regret for the postponement, ATC and TAIK stressed their confidence in the durability of a strong trade and investment relationship between Turkey and the United States and their agreement to reschedule the Annual Conference at a later date. ATC and TAIK believe that this decision will lead to a stronger and more effective conference.
