Should Turkey be included in the P5+1?

The Arms Control Association’s Kelsey Davenport summarizes a case made by a Turkish professor of international relations for Turkey to be included in the p5+1 (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany):

Despite the failure of the Tehran Declaration, Turkey’s experience negotiating with Iran lends strength to [Mustafa] Kibaroglu’s argument for Turkey’s inclusion. Ankara demonstrated it can work with Tehran. Additionally, in June 2010 Turkey was one of two countries that voted against UN Security Council Resolution 1929, which imposed sanctions on Iran for failing to comply with early resolutions regarding its nuclear program. Given the animosity spurred on by the current sanctions, Iran may be more willing to work with Turkey than the members of the P5+1.

In addition, Kibaroglu reminds us that Israel is not the only Middle Eastern country that would be threatened by Iran obtaining nuclear weapons and that other regional perspectives on the security environment need to be considered. According to him, a nuclear armed Iran would be the “game changer” that affects the relationship between the two countries and tips the balance of power in Iran’s favor.

While Turkish inclusion in the P5+1 may not be the creative solution that revives the negotiations with Iran, Kibaroglu’s recommendations serve as an important reminder that there is no “one size fits all” formula for diplomatic negotiations. If the current P5+1 track does not achieve a breakthrough, it does not mean that negotiations have failed. Rather, that it is time for diplomats to get creative and consider alternative options, such as exploiting the good offices of new parties, to find a solution to the Iranian nuclear question.

For assessing how Iran may respond to Turkey’s inclusion in the P5+1, read Iran expert Farideh Farhi’s recent analysis of Iran-Turkey relations.

American Matt Krause Is Walking Across Turkey to Iran

Matt Krause’s American friends refused to believe that Turkey was anything like the United States. To prove them wrong, he’s walking across the entire country.

“I’m afraid of someone shooting me or slitting my neck on the side of the road. I’m afraid of drunken teenagers beating me up at night.”

Turkey sits in a tricky geopolitical spot, wedged between North African and Middle Eastern nations rife with civil unrest.

On the southeastern border, there’s Iran and Iraq, which are, well, Iran and Iraq. The Arab Spring, the nearly two-year-long wave of protests and demonstrations that have ousted leaders and led to violent backlash, is unfolding right in Turkey’s backyard. Then there’s the civil war in Syria, where the death toll has climbed to 23,000-plus. Turkey, formerly close with Syria, came out against the regime last year and provided support and refuge for opposition forces. This past June, Syria downed a Turkish jet that officials said had crossed into its airspace. And now add to this volatile mix the American-made, Muslim-mocking film Innocence of the Muslims, which sparked demonstrations in more than 20 countries and led protesters to burn American flags outside the embassy in Ankara.

Because of all that, Turkey’s tourism minister has predicted a two-million-person drop in the number of visitors to the country. So why, then, is a 42-year-old former kitchenware-supply-chain manager from California walking 1,305 miles across Turkey with no more than a backpack full of clothes and the equipment necessary to document his adventure?

MATT KRAUSE CONTEMPLATED FOR 10 seconds before leaving his desk job—a gig as a finance analyst with Eddie Bauer Headquarters—in 2003 to follow his Turkish girlfriend to Istanbul. He had met her on board a flight to Hong Kong. After they parted ways, Krause tracked her down—he knew her first name and the California town in which she lived—through some “Google stalking.” He found her, and they started dating.

Living in Istanbul (“Turkey: Round 1,” as he calls it) proved both worldview-altering and mind-numbingly frustrating for Krause. He put all of his money and time into a seemingly promising jewelry-business start-up. He and his girlfriend married. He found work as a niche English teacher because of his professional background. But none of his new life proved sustainable.

After the jewelery business flopped, Krause returned stateside in 2009 to another desk job—this time in Seattle as a supply-chain manager for Progressive International—with his wife planning to later join him. But their marriage, which already had been on the rocks in Turkey, crumbled to pieces with the distance.

While he came to Turkey for the love of a woman, Krause says he left with a deeper connection for the country and its rich culture and warm people. Back home, conversations about Turkey kept coming up, and Krause kept finding himself trying to convince the same non-believer. Turkey and the U.S. really aren’t all that different, he’d say, but words weren’t enough to make it stick. That’s when he realized it was time to move back—and go for a really long walk.

KRAUSE’S SEVEN-MONTH ADVENTURE began on September 1 in the resort town of Kuşadası in Aydın province along the Aegean Coast, and it wraps up in the rural province of Van bordering Iran. Walking 1,305 miles is an objectively difficult thing for any human being to do. Plus, Turkey, encircled by the Aegean, Black, and Mediterranean Seas, is home to some wild and unexplored landscapes—from pristine coniferous forests and lush river valleys to rugged mountain ranges and arid desert plateaus. He’ll wander through sparsely populated plains, trek around the largest lake in the country, and come up against debilitatingly freezing weather (between -22 and -40 degrees Fahrenheit).

    Centenary births dueling adaptations

    By Josh Carney

    ‘Conquest 1453’

ISTANBUL — With the centenary of the battle of Gallipoli just around the corner, Turkish audiences who want to relive the event onscreen will have options, with at least two adaptations of the 1915 WWI campaign set for release.

On Sept. 28, the nation-forging struggle between Ottoman and Allied forces over the straits of the Dardanelles, or what Turks call Canakkale, will first be brought to life in Sinan Cetin’s “Children of Canakkale.” Detailing the story of two brothers who fight on opposite sides in Gallipoli, the $5 million Plato Film project is set to premiere on 400 screens across Turkey.

On Oct. 18, Yesim Sezgin’s “Canakkale 1915,” based on the bestselling historical fiction by Turgut Ozakman, will be released on 1,000 screens across Turkey and Europe. Also boasting a $5 million budget, this Fida Film production focuses on the battle as a foundation for the Turkish Republic.

Both films should benefit from a recent surge in interest among Turks for historical dramas. This year’s “Conquest 1453,” detailing the conquering of Istanbul, grossed $31 million, to become the biggest film in Turkish history, and is being turned into a TV series. Historical series draw high ratings on Turkish TV, including “Magnificent Century” (dealing with the court of Suleyman the Magnificent), “Law of the Wolf” (covering the early Turkish Republic) and “Ottoman Mutiny” (relating the middle Ottoman period).

“Children of Canakkale” distinguishes itself from many Turkish war films by its antiwar stance. The film has already stirred controversy for its tagline, “Long live the children, too,” a likely reference to the popular nationalist chant “Long live the homeland.” Roughly a third of the dialog is in English, a choice the producers say highlights the shared horror of war on all sides.

“Canakkale 1915” marks out quite different territory with the tagline: “No enemy, army or weapon can be mightier than the love for a nation.” Producers stress the realism of the film, noting the authentic arms, costumes and locations, including the actual battlefields of the Dardanelles, for which they received special shooting permission.

Playing to an audience that enthusiastically embraces local product, these takes on the battle may be just the beginning of films on the subject, with at least three other major productions pegged at various stages of development.

So whatever the most appropriate tagline for all these works may be, it’s certain Turkish filmmakers are crying, “Long live the battle of Gallipoli.”

UK: John Terry Found Guilty Of Racial Abuse By FA

Chelsea captain John Terry has received a four-match ban and a £220,000 fine after being found guilty of racial abuse by the FA.

Former England captain John Terry has been found guilty by the English Football Association of racially abusing an opponent.

The Chelsea captain has been banned for four domestic matches and fined £220,000, pending an appeal.

He was convicted by an FA hearing of directing abuse at Queen’s Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match last October.

The defender denied the charge but the FA independent regulatory commission ruled that he was guilty of misconduct.

The guilty verdict came despite the 31-year-old being cleared by a criminal court in July of a racially-aggravated public order offence.

Terry’s representatives, Elite Management, said he was “disappointed” by the verdict, which was “a different conclusion to the clear not guilty verdict of a court of law”.

They added he will ask for detailed written reasons of the decision before deciding whether to lodge an appeal.

Former executive director of the FA David Davies told Sky News the verdict was “sad” but “not totally unexpected”.

He said he thought Terry would appeal “because he is a fighter and he will think this is wrong”.

“John Terry has been a battler through his career. Whatever you think of this incident… the reality is as a player he has given his all to England and Chelsea over the years and that’s in his nature,” he said.

Author and critic Diran Adebayo welcomed the FA’s decision. “I’m pleased this has been exposed. In modern Britain you should not be able to get away with saying these things,” he told Sky News.

Before the hearing, at Wembley, started this week, Terry announced his retirement from international football.

The player was found not guilty in Westminster Magistrates Court in July of a racially-aggravated public order offence with the prosecution unable to prove the words he said to Ferdinand were being used as an insult.

Terry admitted using them, but insisted he had only been repeating words he thought Ferdinand had accused him of saying.

Chelsea and England team-mate Ashley Cole gave evidence that helped exonerate Terry, telling the court: “We shouldn’t be sitting here”.

Terry’s legal team had argued the governing body’s own rules dictated that his acquittal in court meant the case could not proceed but the FA believed their charge was distinct from the court’s.

The panel, who handed Liverpool striker Luis Suarez an eight-match ban when they found him guilty of racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra last season, declared at that time that simply using racist language was enough to constitute a breach of FA rules.

In a statement Chelsea said: “Chelsea Football Club notes and respects today’s decision by the Football Association regarding John Terry.

“We also recognise that John has the right to appeal that decision. It is therefore inappropriate for us to comment further on the matter at this time.”

Terry is likely to be available to play in the Premier League match against Arsenal on Saturday as the ban does not start until after the appeals process has been completed.

He will have 14 days after receiving the written reasons for the decision in which to appeal. If he does make a challenge the appeal hearing may not take place until the end of next month.

That could see the Chelsea talisman still being available for the club’s other league matches in October against Norwich, Tottenham and Manchester United.
