16 Mayıs 2017 günü Washington, DC’de Büyükelçilik Rezidansı önünde yer alan olayın ayrıntılı dökümünü içermesi ve açılmış olan kampanyayı toplumumuzun bilgilerine iletmekte yarar görüyorum. Washington, DC’de yer alan olay sadece Cumhurbaşkanına değil, Türkiye’ye karşı yapılmış bir girişimdir.

Türk Amerikan Toplumu Büyükelçi Kılıç’a Karşı Başlatılan Karalama Kampanyasına Dur Diyor

Türk Amerikan toplumu Büyükelçilik Rezidansı önünde PKK yandaşlarının Türk vatandaşlarına saldırması sonrası yaşanan arbedenin ardından Washington Büyükelçisi Serdar Kılıç’a destek olmak üzere bir mektup kampanyası başlattılar.

Washington Büyükelçiliği Rezidansı önünde Cumhurbaşkanı Erdoğan’ı karşılamak için bekleyen Türk vatandaşlarının, terör örgütü PKK yandaşları tarafından saldırıya uğramasının ardından yaşanan arbede sonrası Büyükelçi Serdar Kılıç, ABD Dışişlerine çağrılmış ve Cumhuriyetçi Senatör John McCain, Büyükelçi Kılıç’ın ABD’den gönderilmesi gerektiğine dair açıklamada bulunmuştu. Yaşananların ardın Türkiye de ABD’ye sözlü ve yazılı protestoda bulunudu.

ABD Basını ve kamuoyunun Gezi Parkı olayları ve 15 Temmuz Darbe girişiminde sergilediği iki yüzlü tutum yine kendini göstererek PKK Terör örgütü yandaşlarının Türk vatandaşlarına saldırıp yaralaması ve sonrasında yaşanan olaylar sanki Cumhurbaşkanı Erdoğan’ı protesto eden barışçıl göstericiler darp edilmiş gibi gösterilmek istendi.

Washington Büyükelçiliği Rezidansı önünde neler yaşandı?

Cumhurbaşkanı Erdoğan’ın saat 16.00 sularında elçilik konutuna geleceği biliniyordu. PKK sempatizanları 15:30’dan itibaren konutun hemen yanındaki parkta toplanmaya başlamıştı.

Gruptaki 20 civarındaki eylemci, elebaşı Abdullah Öcalan posterleri, Selahattin Demirtaş fotoğrafları ve terör örgütünün Suriye uzantısı YPG’nin bayraklarını taşıyordu.

Örgüt yandaşları, Erdoğan’ı hedef alan sloganların yanı sıra, yolun hemen karşısındaki Türklere küfür ve hakaretler yağdırmaya başladı.

Türkiye’yi destekleyen sloganlar atan grup ise karşı tarafın provokatif hareketlerine sözlü karşılık verdi.

Dakikalar ilerledikçe, PKK sempatizanlarının başta Erdoğan olmak üzere barışçıl destek gösterisi düzenleyen gruba yönelttikleri küfür ve hakaretler daha ağır hal aldı.

Beyaz Saray önündeki eylem için gerekli yerlerden izin alan eylemciler, Büyükelçilik konutu önünde polis teşkilatına bilgi vermeden toplanmıştı.

Yasaların Büyükelçilik konutu önündeki eylem için izin gerektirmediğini biliyorduk. Fakat ABD’deki teamül, polise bilgi verilerek, güvenlik tedbirleri almasına imkan tanımak şeklindeydi. Örgüt sempatizanlarının polise bilgi vermekten kaçınması, bizde, “Büyük bir olaya davetiye mi çıkarılmak isteniyor?” endişesini doğurmuştu. Çünkü daha güçlü güvenlik tedbiri alınmasını sağlayabilecekken bunu yapmamışlardı.

Örgüt yandaşları sözde barışçıl eylemde yoğun küfür ve hakaretlerle karşılarındakileri kontrolden çıkarmak için adeta özel bir çaba içerisindeydi.

PKK sempatizanlarının yolun ortasına kadar megafonlarla gelerek provokasyona davetiye çıkarmasıyla Türkiye’ye destek veren grubun tahrik olmaya başladığını farkettik.

Hemen ardından Türk vatandaşlarının üzerine su şişeleri atılması, iki taraf arasında 10-15 saniye süren ilk arbedeyi tetikledi. Caddenin ortasında 10-15 kadar eylemci yumruklaştı.

Kavgaya sadece iki Amerikan polisi müdahale etti. Polisin hazırlıksız olduğu açıktı. Zaten, Washington DC polis teşkilatından gelip görev yapan polis sayısı 10 civarındaydı.

Polis, vatandaşın yaralanmasına duyarsız kaldı

Kısa süren arbedeye karışan Alp Kenan Dereci adlı Türk vatandaşı, bir terör örgütü sempatizanının megafonu kafasına vurmasıyla ciddi şekilde yaralandı.

Yüzü kanlar içinde kaldı. Dereci’ye ilk müdahaleyi ambulansla gelen sağlık ekibi yaptı ve hastaneye kaldırdı.

Dereci’nin durumu ve saldırganın kim olduğu, olay yerindeki polis şefine defalarca anlatıldı.

Polis şefine, bunun basit bir yumruk olmadığı, açıkça adam yaralama maksatlı harici bir madde ile saldırıldığı, saldırganın kaçmadan tutuklanması gerektiği, aksi halde kitlenin yatışmayacağı ifade edildi.

Fakat polis şefi o an hiçbir şey yapamayacağını belirtti. Bu tutum, olayların büyümesindeki en önemli etkenlerden oldu. Çünkü tutuklanmayan saldırgan, küfür ve sloganlarına devam etti.

Sonradan edindiğimiz bilgiye göre Kasım Kurd adlı şahıs, Federal ve Washington DC polisi tarafından aranmaya başlanmıştı.

Daha sonra taraflar kendi bölgelerine geçerek sözlü atışmaya devam ettiler. Bu esnada birçok Türk, az sayıdaki polise giderek ortada fiili darp olduğunu, kimin yaptığının görüldüğünü ve saldırganın derhal gözaltına alınması gerektiğini dile getirdi.

Ancak polis uyarıları dikkate almadığı gibi Türk tarafını sükûnete davet edip, kaldırıma doğru geri gitmesini istedi.

Örgüt taraftarları Erdoğan’a 15-20 metre yakınlıktaydı

İlk arbedenin ardından olay yerindeki polis sayısı artsa da Türk tarafındaki barikat uygulaması, terör örgütü yandaşlarına uygulanmadı.

Önlerinde engel bulunmayan örgüt sempatizanları, rahatlıkla Türk tarafına yaklaşıp su şişesi atabildi ya da küfürlerini duyurabildi.

Beyaz Saray önündeki izinli eylemlerinde dahi polis tarafından çok uzak noktada tutulan örgüt destekçileri, polise bilgi vermeden toplandıkları büyükelcilik konutu önünde Erdoğan’ın 15-20 metre yakınına sokulabilmişti.

Bu mesafede terör örgütü destekçilerinin sergilediği fanatizm, güvenlik kaygılarını da artırmıştı.

Erdoğan’ın konuta gelmesiyle megafonlarla hakaretlerin dozajını arttıran eylemcilere bu esnada Türk vatandaşları ve bazı Cumhurbaşkanlığı korumaları müdahale etti.

Müdahalenin ardından örgüt yandaşları dağıldı.

Öte yandan, Amerikan medyası olayları tetikleyen anları bir bütün olarak vermek yerine, yalnızca son anları yansıtmayı tercih etti. Böylece, olaylara, Türkiye’ye destek veren grubun kaynaklık ettiği ve örgüt yandaşlarının mağduriyet yaşadığı gibi bir izlenim verildi.

ABD’ye Sözlü ve Yazılı Protesto

Dışişleri Bakanlığından yapılan açıklamada, “Büyükelçilik Kançılaryası önünde ABD güvenlik personelinin Sayın Bakanımızın koruma ekibine yönelik davranışları ABD Büyükelçisi nezdinde sözlü ve yazılı olarak protesto edilmiştir.” denildi.

ABD’nin Ankara Büyükelçisi John Bass, Cumhurbaşkanı Recep Tayyip Erdoğan‘ın Washington ziyareti sırasında ABD güvenlik personeli tarafından Dışişleri Bakanı Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu‘nun yakın koruma ekibine yönelik “saldırgan davranışlar” nedeniyle Dışişleri Bakanlığına çağrıldı.

Dışişleri Bakanlığı tarafından yapılan açıklamada, “Sayın Cumhurbaşkanımızın geçtiğimiz hafta Washington’ı ziyareti sırasında, Büyükelçilik Kançılaryası önünde ABD güvenlik personelinin Sayın Bakanımızın yakın koruma ekibine karşı yerleşik diplomatik kural ve teamüller hilafına sergilemiş oldukları profesyonelliğe aykırı saldırgan davranışlar bugün bakanlığımıza çağrılan ABD Büyükelçisi nezdinde sözlü ve yazılı olarak protesto edilmiş, ABD makamlarının bu olayı soruşturması ve gerekli açıklamanın tarafımıza yapılması resmen talep edilmiştir.” ifadesi yer aldı.

Açıklama, şöyle devam etti:

“ABD Büyükelçisi ile yapılan görüşmede, Sayın Cumhurbaşkanımızın Washington’da bulunduğu süre zarfında karşılaşılan ve ABD makamlarının gerekli önlemleri programın her aşamasında alamamasından kaynaklanan güvenlik zaaflarının, diğer her açıdan başarılı geçen bu önemli ziyareti gölgeleyemeyeceği vurgulanmıştır.”

Washington Büyükelçisi Serdar Kılıç’a destek olmak için mektup kampanyası

Dear Senator McCain

I write this letter with great despair in expressing how disappointed I am to see a distinguished senator, someone that the Turkish-American community respects, siding with supporters of a violent terrorist organization over Turkey, a key U.S. ally.

The problems on May 16, 2017 stemmed from the DC police’s failure to distance supporters of this violent PKK group from getting too close to the Turkish President, to the Turkish delegation and the Turkish-American supporters of the Turkish Republic while transforming their protest into violence.

By way of background, since the PKK was founded in November of 1978, it has been carrying terrorist activities viciously and violently attacking the Republic of Turkey, its security forces as well as innocent civilians (men, women and children). The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by several states and organizations, including the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the United States and the European Union. In 1994, the PKK was estimated to have between 10,000 and 15,000 armed terrorist fighters. The PKK is responsible for the death of over 40,000 people and is one of the most violent and vicious terrorist groups in existence today. The PKK doesn’t just target Turkish citizens; in 1993 (in one year alone), the PKK terrorist kidnapped 19 Western tourists traveling in southeastern Turkey, including U.S. citizen Colin Patrick Starger.

Needless to say, the Turkish-American community is very disappointed in your characterization of those civilians showing support for President Erdogan, and your erroneous one-sided view of the events that occurred on May 16, 2017.

To begin with, as you are well aware, part of the USA Patriot Act – makes it a federal crime for anyone to provide any help or support to a terror group. The protesters showing support for the PKK terrorist organization on May 16, 2017, were clearly in violation of the USA Patriot Act. Despite said illegal activity by these “thugs”, the DC police refused to arrest or, at the least, disburse this group, giving rise to the clash between Turkish-Americans and the PKK supporters, (the real thugs).

Furthermore, as a sad reminder, let’s not forget the attack on the US Embassy in Benghazi in September of 2012. If you recall, the event started with a group allegedly gathering to wage a protest (i.e. exercising their freedom of speech) just like the PKK supporters on May 16. As we all discovered, these terrorist, disguised as protesters, turned violent and raided our embassy resulting in the death of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and officer Sean Smith. The appearance of the terrorist supporters on May 16, 2017 feet from the Turkish ambassador’s residence, resembled the terrorist in Benghazi in many regards. I am sure you will agree, we have to be mindful of terrorist disguised as “protesters” when it comes to safety and security and take the necessary precautions.

With this reality of terrorism in mind, compounded with the harsh words and the aggressive behavior portrayed by the terrorist supporters, you can understand the concern of President Erdogan’s security team. Again, not knowing their true intention, the need to disburse the terrorist supporters which were allowed to gather within feet of the Turkish President and the Turkish Ambassador’s residence became a necessity; not to interfere with free speech, but rather to prevent an event like Benghazi, should the protesters become more violent.

A protest filled with words of hate and incitement to violence, occurring literally a few feet away from the President of Turkey and the residence of the Turkish Ambassador cannot possibly be considered “free speech” by any stretch of the imagination. Cognizant of Benghazi, the Turkish Ambassador approached the DC police on a number of occasions and asked them to disburse the terrorist supporters or distance them from the embassy to no avail.

Realizing that the DC police chose to remain inactive, the terrorist supporters escalated the situation and started to throw object at President Erdogan and the Turkish-American supporters from a close distance. Despite the DC police observing the terrorist supporters throwing objects at peacefully gather citizens and the Turkish President and despite being asked by the Turkish Ambassador for assistance, they were either incapable or simply unwilling to prevent the violence from escalating.

With the escalation of violence and the DC police being mere spectators, the need to disburse the terrorist supporters became a necessity for President Erdogan’s security team. Again, the cause of the clash with the terrorist supporters were not a result of the Turkish security forces or Turkish-American’s acting like “thugs” as you erroneously thought, but rather the very real concern that the real thugs, the supporters of the PKK terrorist, converting what appeared to be a protest into an act of violence; the concern of the Turkish security forces was to prevent the terrorist supporters from waging a Benghazi like attack; only this time, the attack would be on US soil with the Turkish President and Ambassador as the target.

Clearly, you will agree that there are have to be limits on how a protest is waged. Although we all support free speech and the right to assemble, there has to be limits when safety and security becomes an issue. “The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man in falsely shouting fire in a theater and causing a panic”. Likewise, when the safety and security of a visiting president, regardless of who it is, becomes a concern, the Police in DC and secret service have a duty and an obligation to act. Just as you would not allow people (even when disguised as protesters) to get so close to our President (or other officials) whereby they can be capable of causing imminent harm, you must agree that the same concern should be extended to a visiting President.

Serdar Kilic, the Turkish Ambassador, which you said “should be thrown out of the country”, in all realty should be commemorated for his wisdom in seeing that the terrorist supporters had gathered to cause violence despite disguising their act as a form of a protest while allegedly exercising their “freedom of speech.” Unfortunately, the DC police would not yield to Ambassador Kilic’s sincere and earnest warnings, giving rise to the incidents that occurred on May 16, 2017.

Again, what gave rise to the clash between Turkish-Americans and supporters of a terrorist organization was a failure of the DC police to distance the terrorist supporters from the Turkish Embassy and/or to prevent the terrorist supporters from escalating their protest into violence. Contrary to the story that you were told, the violence did not stem from any act of Ambassador Kilic, the security forces for President Erdogan or any of the Turkish-Americans, but rather resulted solely because of DC police’s inability to control the terrorist supporters.

My further concern with this incident and more particularly your view, is a matter of setting a precedent. Clearly, if President Trump, or any other elected official (including yourself), is ever visiting a foreign country, we would not want to see a few police officers being the only barrier between our elected officials and supporters of a terrorist organization, especially if the terrorist supporters are allowed to come so close to our delegation so as to be capable of causing imminent harm. Surely, what we do here today may set a precedent for how you and our other elected officials can expect to be treated abroad. Yes, we should all support free speech, but we should never lose touch with realities of the world, especially when it comes to supporters of terrorist (regardless of which terrorist organization it is) coming so close that our elected officials are in the zone of danger.

Knowing your sincerity, I can only imagine that you have not been provided with the true facts and/or all of the relevant facts. I cannot imagine any other reason for your support of thugs that have gathered to incite violence in support of a terrorist organization over peaceful Turkish-American gathering to show support for the President of Turkey, who was a guest in our country with the invitation of our President.

I hope you will reconsider your position, view all the facts truly and sincerely, and stand by democratically elected leaders (especially those from Nations that have a proven track record of being US allies) while opposing any and all forms of support for terrorist.
