Tiny variation in 1 gene may have led to crucial changes in human brain

The human brain has yet to explain the origin of one its defining features – the deep fissures and convolutions that increase its surface area and allow for rational and abstract thoughts.

An international collaboration of scientists from the Yale School of Medicine and Turkey may have discovered humanity’s beneficiary – a tiny variation within a single gene that determines the formation of brain convolutions – they report online May 15 in the journal Nature Genetics.

A genetic analysis of a Turkish patient whose brain lacks the characteristic convolutions in part of his cerebral cortex revealed that the deformity was caused by the deletion of two genetic letters from 3 billion in the human genetic alphabet. Similar variations of the same gene, called laminin gamma3 (LAMC3), were discovered in two other patients with similar abnormalities.

“The demonstration of the fundamental role of this gene in human brain development affords us a step closer to solve the mystery of the crown jewel of creation, the cerebral cortex,” said Murat Gunel, senior author of the paper and the Nixdorff-German Professor of Neurosurgery, co-director of the Neurogenetics Program and professor of genetics and neurobiology at Yale.

The folding of the brain is seen only in mammals with larger brains, such as dolphins and apes, and is most pronounced in humans. These fissures expand the surface area of the cerebral cortex and allow for complex thought and reasoning without taking up more space in the skull. Such foldings aren’t seen in mammals such as rodents or other animals. Despite the importance of these foldings, no one has been able to explain how the brain manages to create them. The LAMC3 gene – involved in cell adhesion that plays a key role in embryonic development – may be crucial to the process.

An analysis of the gene shows that it is expressed during the embryonic period that is vital to the formation of dendrites, which form synapses or connections between brain cells. “Although the same gene is present in lower organisms with smooth brains such as mice, somehow over time, it has evolved to gain novel functions that are fundamental for human occipital cortex formation and its mutation leads to the loss of surface convolutions, a hallmark of the human brain,” Gunel said.

Major funding for the study was provided by National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke through the Recovery Act. Several institutions from Turkey contributed to the paper. Co-lead authors of the paper were Tanyeri Barak and Kenneth Y Kwan of Yale. Smoke the Iraqi donkey, a favorite of Camp Pendleton Marines, arrives in U.S.

    Donkey

A donkey adopted as a pet by Marines from Camp Pendleton while they were deployed in Iraq has been brought to America to serve as a therapy animal for wounded military personnel.

Smoke arrived last week in New York aboard a cargo flight that originated in Turkey after a combined effort of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and retired Marine Col. John Folsom.

In 2008, Folsom and Marines from the Camp Pendleton-based 1st Marine Logistics Group found the donkey at Camp Taqaddum in Anbar province. The animal quickly became a favorite. His name comes from his color and the fact that he once snatched a cigarette from a Marine.

In 2009 the Marines departed but Folsom never stopped thinking of Smoke and what a morale boost he was for the troops. With help from the SPCA, Folsom raised funds and cleared away bureaucratic obstacles to get Smoke to America.

The SPCA estimates the final cost at upward of $40,000. The group has brought dogs and cats from Iraq but Smoke was the first of his species. The U.S. ambassador in Turkey was recruited to help get Smoke from neighboring Iraq.

“Once you met him and saw what a unique donkey he was, it was hard to say no to him,” said SPCA official Terri Crisp.

Supporters are bringing the donkey by truck to Folsom’s home in Omaha, Neb., where Smoke will serve as a therapy animal for the Wounded Warrior Family Support organization.

“He’s an American donkey now,” Folsom told the Associated Press.

Turkey Demands Israel Give Names of Counter-Terror Commandos

Follow Israel news on Twitter and Facebook.

Turkey has petitioned Israel to identify the names of the Navy commandos who stopped the IHH flotilla last May from reaching Hamas-controlled Gaza and killed nine terrorists.

The Turkish daily Today%u2019s Zayman reported Saturday that %u201CIstanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office has submitted a letter to Israeli judicial authorities, demanding the identity of responsible people%u201D in the counterterrorist operation. The letter demanded names and contact details along with an official copy of information and documents related to the incident.

Turkey has accused Israel of premediated murder and its probe of the May 31 flotilla clash implicated Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, President Shimon Peres, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

The incident froze what already were frigid relations between Israel and Turkey, which was a long-time friend of the Jewish State until Operation Cast Lead two years ago and Prime Minister Erdogan’s rapprochement with fundamental Islam, Syria and Iran.

The flotilla clash sparked international accusations against Israel, which contained some of the condemnation with documented evidence that the IHH %u201Chumanitarian aid” flotilla was a camouflage for an intended armed conflict with Israeli soldiers.

An inspection of the Mavi Marmara boat, which was the only one of the six ships in the flotilla that was involved in the clash, contained no humanitarian aid at all.

Videos taken from the ship showed that IHH activists took and made weapons on board and attacked the Navy commandos, which were unarmed except for paint-ball guns and revolvers, as they descended on deck from hovering helicopters.

Another flotilla, including the Mavi Marmara ship, is being planned in June to test the Israeli maritime blockade on Hamas-controlled Gaza, where the terrorist organization has smuggled in advanced weapons, terrorists and hundreds of tons of explosives over the past several years.

Elif Balci Fisunoglu Evaluating the ICCA results, General Manager of Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bureau; Mrs. Elif Balcı Fisunoğlu said, “Obviously this was something we expected, ICCA is gathering information from many sources to create this ranking. When we created the list of congresses in the city, we expected that those numbers will rank us in the top 10 this year. Each year in February, we sent information of congresses our members hosted and organized in the city to ICCA. Cooperation of our industry with us to share that information is very important. Istanbul is an international convention destination approved by the authorities of MICE industry. Today, congresses such as AIDS, Cardiology, and Rotary are planning to be held in Istanbul; this is a proof of Istanbul’s popularity as being one of the top convention destinations of the world”.

“In the early 2000s, Istanbul entered the listing from the 40th place with 20 congresses annually. In the last 10 years, with a rapidly increase in number of congresses in the city, positioned Istanbul in the Top 10. Undoubtedly, ICVB’s role at presenting and promoting the city as a convention city abroad, studies done by DMCs, presence of national associations and institutions in the international arena, internationally recognized convention centers and hotels and their high quality services played a major role at positioning Istanbul one of the world’s leading convention cities” added Mrs. Fisunoğlu.

According to the ICCA Statistics report, Turkey ranked world’s 20th and Europe’s 12th with 160 congresses. USA ranked at first place with 623 congresses followed by Germany with 542 congresses. Spain with 451 congresses and UK with 399 congresses follows Germany.

The annual ICCA “International Association Meetings Market” statistics present an in-depth evaluation of trends in the international meetings industry. The association conventions reviewed by the ICCA must have at least 50 attendees, be regular events and take place alternately in at least three different countries. Founded in 1963, the International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA) is based in Amsterdam and has been collecting data on association events world-wide since 1972

Thousands March in Istanbul Against Turkish Internet Censorship

Thousands of Turkish demonstrators poured into central Istanbul today to protest against the government’s Internet censorship.

Haberturk newspaper said 50,000 joined a protest centered on the city’s Taksim Square, while CNN-Turk reported “hundreds of thousands” taking to the streets in demonstrations across the country.

New regulations from Turkey’s Internet Technologies and Communications Authority set to come into effect on Aug. 22 will require Internet service providers to offer a choice of four filtering options: family, child, domestic or standard. Many websites are expected to be blocked as a result of the filtering measures, Zaman newspaper reported.

More than 600,000 people joined a Facebook page named “Internetime Dokunma!” or “Don’t Touch My Internet!” The group’s organizers say Turkish authorities have already blocked 60,000 websites.
