More ‘Outside’ Moments

We asked our fellow staffers for their favorite Outside moments of the year, and we want to hear yours, too. In the comments, tell us what moved you, what mattered to you, and what moment stood out most.

My favorite moment of the year? Erden Eruc completing his solo, human-powered circumnavigation. Unfortunately, I was completely unaware of it when it happened. I’ve become so jaded when it comes to these types of big events. The First Person to Ever Bike Ski Some Mountain on the Way Up and Bike It on the Way Back Down. It’s inspiring once. But when I hear about these trips every single day, I just stop caring. With Eruc’s trip, that was a mistake. I only learned about it when Nick Heil wrote the story for us, but what Eruc did is absolutely incredible. He’s not the first to do a human-powered circumnavigation, but to row, paddle, walk, or bike his way completely around the world alone? That’s impressive. It takes a determination and drive that most people only dream about. And it was the first time I’ve been inspired in a long, long time.
