Şimdiki Zaman
Şimdiki zaman is the main tense in Turkish and can be used as simple present continuous, simple present, and present perfect continuous tense.
1- Describing something happening now.
Şimdi telefonda konuşuyorum. (I am talking on the phone now.)
Aslı bahçede oynuyor. (Aslı is palying in the garden.)
Karen balkonda çay içiyor. (Karen is drinking tea at the balcony.)
Şu an meşgulum, bebeği yıkıyorum. (I am busy now, bathing the baby.)
Onlar içerde ders çalışıyorlar. (They are studying inside.)
Ben bisiklet sürüyorum. ( I am riding my bike.)
2- Expressing senses and emotions.
Görüyorum. ( I see)
Anlıyorum. ( I understand)
Seviyorum. (I love it)
Hissediyorum. (I feel it)
3- Stating an unchanging fact.
Sigara kulanmıyorum. ( I don’t smoke)
Rejim yapmıyorum. ( I don’t go on a diet)
4- Stating how long you have been doing something.
2000’den beri İspanyolca öğreniyorum. ( I have been studying Spannish since 2000)
Kızım 5 yıldır danse okuluna gidiyor. ( My daughter has been attending the dance school for 5 years)
Şimdiki zaman is used for other purposes too, we will cover them later on. Now let’s have a look at the verb structure. As you noticed, -iyor is the key. After the stem, we need to add two verb endings: the tense ending and the correct personal ending.
For the tense
-ıyor, -iyor, uyor, üyor
If the verb has a as a last vowel, we bring –ıyor
e as a last vowel, we bring –iyor
o as a last vowel, we bring –uyor
ö as a last vowel, we bring –üyor
and when the verb ends with a vowel we simply bring -yor
For the personal ending
Ben -um Biz -uz
Sen -un Siz -sunuz
O none Onlar -ler, -lar
Let’s have some examples and it will all be clear.
Yazmak = to write stem is yaz
(Ben) yazıyorum. (Biz) yazıyoruz.
(Sen) yazıyorsun. (Siz) yazıyorsunuz.
(Ahmet) yazıyor. (Onlar) yazıyorlar.
Kızmak = to get angry stem is kız
(Ben) kızıyorum. (Biz) kızıyoruz.
(Sen) kızıyorsun. (Siz) kızıyorsunuz.
(Alison) kızıyor. (Onlar) kızıyorlar.
Gelmek = to come stem is gel
(Ben) geliyorum. (Biz) kızıyoruz.
(Sen) geliyorsun. (Siz) kızıyorsunuz.
(O) geliyor. (Onlar) kızıyorlar.
Silmek = to wipe/ to delete stem is sil
(Ben) siliyorum. (Biz) siliyoruz.
(Sen) siliyorsun. (Siz) siliyorsunuz.
(Tolga) siliyor. (Onlar) siliyorlar.
Koşmak = to run stem is koş
(Ben) koşuyorum. (Biz) koşuyoruz.
(Sen) koşuyorsun. (Siz) koşuyorsunuz.
(Hüseyin) koşuyor. (Onlar) koşuyorlar.
Bulmak= to find stem is bul
(Ben) buluyorum. (Biz) buluyoruz.
(Sen) buluyorsun. (Siz) buluyorsunuz.
(Sinem) buluyor. (Onlar) buluyorlar.
Görmek = to see stem is gör
(Ben) görüyorum. (Biz) görüyoruz.
(Sen) görüyorsun. (Siz) görüyorsunuz.
(Alican) görüyor. (Onlar) görüyorlar.
Gülmek = to laugh stem is gül
(Ben) gülüyorum. (Biz) gülüyoruz.
(Sen) gülüyorsun. (Siz) gülüyorsunuz.
(Nicola) gülüyor. (Onlar) gülüyorlar.
Okumak = to read stem is oku * the verb ends with a vowel so only add -yor
(Ben) okuyorum. (Biz) okuyoruz.
(Sen) okuyorsun. (Siz) okuyorsunuz.
(Gürbüz) okuyor. (Onlar) okuyorlar.
