No Turkish party free to speak up for captives held by PKK

Article Summary
Dozens of Turkish captives held by the Kurdistan Workers Party seem forgotten by Turkey’s politicians, none of whom have much to gain and everything to lose by calling attention to their plight.

As Turkey keeps up attacks against Kurdish rebels in their stronghold in the Qandil Mountains straddling Iran and Iraq, the plight of Turkish soldiers, intelligence operatives and various other Turkish citizens being held by the militants has received scant attention and there is growing worry among their families they might get caught in the middle.

Rights groups have urged the opposition to highlight their plight ahead of critical presidential and parliamentary elections on June 24. Critics charge that Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan launched the latest wave of airstrikes on Qandil to garner nationalist support in the polls. “We are bombing Qandil. And in a few days we will have auspicious news for you,” Erdogan said at a campaign rally on June 15, prompting speculation that either a senior Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) figure would be captured or killed, or the hostages freed.

“There are easily dozens of such captives in the hands of the PKK,” said Ozturk Turkdogan, the president of Turkey’s Human Rights association who liaises with the rebels and the government on their families’ behalf. “We contacted all the opposition leaders urging them to say something and got no response,” he told Al-Monitor. Turkdogan speculated they are ignoring the issue for fear that Turkey’s hawkish president would use it against them. “Erdogan could easily accuse them of trying to sabotage the Qandil operation and of supporting terrorists.”

Erdogan has already leveled similar accusations against Muharrem Ince, his pro-secular opposition rival who has emerged as something of a potential nemesis according to recent opinion polls. Erdogan called Ince a “terrorist flunky” after Ince visited Selahattin Demirtas, the imprisoned presidential contender running for the largest pro-Kurdish bloc. “He is leaning on murderers with bloodstained hands for support,” Erdogan declared at a campaign rally in the mainly Kurdish province of Van on June 19.

On June 7, the PKK released videos of nine captives who complained about the government’s inertia and appealed to authorities, members of the opposition and civic rights groups to take action on their behalf. “The government should do something for us. Have we been stripped of our citizenship? Not a soul even utters our names,” lamented one Muslum Altintas, who was captured by the PKK on Oct. 2, 2015, during his mandatory military service in Tunceli province. Another conscript called Suleyman Sungur said he had been held for three years. “I haven’t heard from my mother, my father, from nobody. This war has continued for 40 years, with nothing gained. People have only died. We want peace, for people not to die and to be reunited with our families.”

Turkey has steadily escalated attacks against the PKK since a mutually observed cease-fire collapsed along with peace talks in 2015. The PKK has been waging a bloody campaign initially for Kurdish independence and now for self-rule inside Turkey since 1984, and is formally designated a terror group by the United States and the European Union.

Turkdogan said the PKK had agreed to post the videos of the captives at his behest. “We wanted families to see with their own eyes that they are alive and OK but also to create awareness,” he said. The militants might have also reckoned that the videos would serve as a deterrent against further Turkish attacks. The Turkish government has not commented on them so far.

In January, the PKK published footage of two high-ranking members of Turkey’s national spy agency MIT who were seized during a sting operation in the Iraqi Kurdish-controlled Sulaimaniyah province as they were allegedly plotting to assassinate Cemil Bayik, a top PKK commander.

The affair was a huge embarrassment and MIT’s high-flying boss Hakan Fidan has kept a low profile ever since.

A voter of AKP (Erdogan) has posted to her Facebook a photo voting in Brussels , later in a new post she posted in her Facebook a new photo voting at Izmir Airport.. The first image shared by the citizen, who is resident in Belgium, shows her casting a vote at the polling station in Brussels, and the second shows her holding a stamp and about to cast her vote at the ballot box in İzmir airport.
I think they will make difficult for Kurds to vote and easy Erdogan’s supporters to vote twice.
I thought that Erdogan will use the votes of the dead and the trees to win but it seems he will allow his supporters to vote twice!,

Well if it’s on Facebook then it must be true! If they were allowing people to vote twice at Izmir airport and Belgium then that would not only affect AKP supporters, but HDP, CHP and other supporters as well. Sounds like people are getting nervous about the result and putting out the usual propaganda and disinformation to discredit the result before the vote even takes place.

Turkey as champion of fake news, recently reported. As turks in continental EU voted largely AKP(one wonders why?), there is an AKP incentive for (another) fraud.

I’ve not seen the report, but the result would not surprise me because as far as I can tell the vast majority of fake news is anti-Turkey, not pro-Turkey.

The US activity promotes and pursues barbaric policies of civilian cold blooded execution in Gasa and the West Bank settlements are not far behind, settlers calling themselves Jews run down Palestinian children deliberately and the US applauds, on the other hand everyone else except the US has to uphold such high Civilized Standards, WHY ? U might ask, and the answer is because the US is almost a spent force, which doesn’t vogue well for the Kurds who soon will without a sugar daddy.

You need to focus “young lodner” and cut down on those controlled substances even if you do consider them mind expanding. Have you considered space travel on the star ship Enterprise or on battle star Galacticia?. Try not to be assimilated by a Borg cube, please even if you also consider “7 of 9” to have a rather nice bottom :o)

The article is about PKK holding Turkisk prisoners, PKK is a Kurdish secessionist movement with its grass roots supporters not in Iceland as you migh think being an imbecile and a traitor.
For a start PKK is not another side as you maintain in other posts, it’s a revolutionary movement trying to overthrow a Legitimate Government with the support of foreign powers, same with your SDF that you admit is a failure, the price of failure is death when you play the revolutionaty game.

PKK is a resistance movement against racist policies by a quasi legal government. It is not trying to overthrow any government but wants kurds to have education in kurdish, just laws, local and regional autonomy and not ve discriminated against.

When that cannot be gained by law, by democratic means, then resistance is legal under international law.

An important subject but also “well addressed” by another Al Monitor from 2013 that readers may fund in the Al Monitor Archives

Turkey, PKK Learn From Past Mistakes
      Ilnur Cevik March 18, 2013

If both sides including the AKP in election power grabbing mode at the moment would follow this approach in which both the AKP and PKK showed genuine intelligence and good will in 2013, then like the ANC & the then Govt in South Africa back in the 1990s, in Turkey in 2018 there would be no prisoners on either side now and both the TSK and the PKK would be working together against ISIS which would have changed the dynamic in Turkey forever for the best (except for those who build their power base in Turkey on conflict, fear anger and hatred), When one starts to pick up Journalists and oppress and imprison them like Mugabe in Zimbabwe, its pretty clear who the fire stater is. Before anyone dismisses these comments, read the above article for yourselves and see joint intelligence and goodwill. If this was followed through there could be one undivided Turkey at peace without a dictator. Ideally in federal state or provincial system like North Americans enjoy making any talk about an form of Independence irrelevant. Now the the same AKP author above who spoke sensibly in 2013, now in 2018 talks about conflict as a AKP puppet . The Turkish people want peace not war and saber rattling for an election as do the bulk of the TSK and PKK. If it were not for Mr. Fire Starter Erdogan after he lost parliamentary majority in the June 2015 elections and lit the match again

BTW the bulk of the Syrian Kurds, the Iranian Kurds and the Turkish Kurds for a number of years now including the PKK talk about federal state or provincial autonomy with minority rights respected, which makes a federal system stronger, and independence unnecessary . They do not want independence that we all know would lead to rivers of blood, sweat and tears. Only the iraqi Kurds made the mistake last year with their independence referendum based on genuine abuses they suffered. Trolls need not say the Syrian SDF/YPG/YPJ, the Turkish Kurds (including the PKK) or the Iranian Kurds are insisting on independence as they are not and it is a bold face lie

All Kurds (and other Turkish minorities) need to be as proud of being Turkish as they are of being Kurdish and then Turkey will slide uncontrollably into peace and stability, including for the region, This is a good future for almost 80 Turks as our NATO brothers and sisters and good regional contributors but not for anyone aspiring to be a Turkish Mugabe under a authoritarian Turkish presidential system that looks more and more like 1930s Germany and the tragic path they took

Jim, I agree with some of your sentiments about wanting to see reconciliation but have to disagree with some of your points. Firstly, the situation with Turkey and the Kurds is not the same as Apartheid and South Africa, and the PKK are most certainly not the ANC. The ANC and the anti-Apartheid struggle was fundamentally a struggle to end minority rule and to implement one man, one vote. The ANC also tirelessly fought AGAINST separation and to unify South Africa as one single nation. Under Apartheid, South Africa had been partitioned into separate areas for different races, including Bantustans, a system which only further entrenched separation (Apartheid literally means segregation on the grounds of race). This is the complete opposite of the situation that Turkey faces. Kurds have the vote in Turkey, black South Africans did not. The anti-Apartheid movement fought against separation, the PKK fights for separation. The anti-Apartheid movement’s struggle was about fundamental human rights – the right to vote, the right to participate in government. The PKK fight is fundamentally about implementing a particular political system.

I am not saying that there is anything wrong with federalism, just that it is something that needs to be campaigned for politically, not at the barrel of a gun. Where it relates to genuine human rights – the practice of language and culture then yes Turkey should ensure that these rights are fully enforced and respected and it should do so unilaterally without the need to negotiate with the PKK.

The key is to not allow extremists from any side to hijack the debate. Reasonable, moderate views are not pro-PKK, but they are not Turkish ultra-nationalist or anti-Kurd either.

There are many areas where Turkish democracy needs to be improved and where there criticism is legitimate. The problem is that it falls on deaf ears when the same people criticising are harbouring, supporting or arming Turkey’s enemies like YPG and the coup organisers. I have always said that if Turkey’s allies wanted to mitigate the worst excesses of the post coup purge, they should have acted with greater solidarity and support. Turkey will still get there, but the siege mentality will just mean that it will have taken a bit longer.
