(See attached press release.) Turkish minority+s duly elected religious leaders are constantly punished by the Greek authorities. We need to let the Greek authorities know this cannot be tolerated. PLEASE USE THE ATTACHED SUGGESTED LETTER AS EXAMPLE TO WRITE YOUR OWN TO THE ATTENTION OF THE GREEK AMBASSADOR TO THE U.S. The Turkish Embassy in Washington received dozens of letters from the Greek community following the recent attack by terrorists on the Patriarchate in Istanbul. We need to mobilize to express our concerns for the Turkish minority in Greece. DRAFT LETTER November __, 1996 Ambassador Loucas Tsilas Embassy of Greece 2221 Massachusetts Ave., N.W. Washington, D.C. 20008 Dear Ambassador Loucas: I am writing to express my outrage over the jailing of a Turkish religious leader in Greece. What could be more fundamental to true religious freedom than the right for a religious group to select its own leaders, and have them practice their faith? The Turkish minority in Western Thrace has done no more than this, electing Mr. Ibrahim Serif to be Mufti of Gumulcine. Yet the Greek Government has sentenced the Mufti to six months in jail for nothing more than trying to perform his religious duties! Greek Americans constantly rail against Turkey for alleged persecution of the Patriarchate in Istanbul. In truth, the Turkish Government protects the Patriarch and clergy, and has brought to trial, convicted, and jailed those terrorists who have attacked the institution. In contrast, the Greek Government does everything it can, against international treaties, to persecute the Turkish minority in Greece, including this latest example of jailing a religious leader. Imagine the reaction if Turkey jailed the Patriarch or another Greek Orthodox clergy for leading religious services! The Mufti should be allowed to perform his duties, and the Turkish minority in Greece permitted the religious and other freedoms they have long been denied. Sincerely, *************************************************************
