DESCRIPTION OF THE TURKISH DAY PARADE AND TURKISH AMERICAN WEEK One of our major activities which unites the Turkish- American community, promote a better understanding of Turkey and Turkish culture, and expresses the concern of our people on various subjects, is the annual Turkish-American Day Pa- rade and Turkish Week in New York City. This event is organ- ized by the Federation in cooperation with her member organizations. Fifthenn years ago, a group of 300-400 people marched on the sidewalk to protest the slaying of Turkish diplomats in the United States by Armenian terrorists. Although they feared for their safety, they still stood strong to make their voices heard. When the assassinations ceased, the Turkish- American community continued to march. This time it was not out of anger, but out of joy and pride for their country. They marched in unity to express their Turkish heritage and to share their culture with the American community. Each year the number of participants grew, as did the parade. Be- cause of the enthusiasm of the community, a parade was not enough. For the first time in 1991, the 10th Annual Turkish American Day Parade was organized as part of what became an Annual Turkish American Week. Each year, the 'week' is ex- tending to fit the numerous events that showcase Turkish culture, educate on Turkish history and highlight the pride of the Turkish-American community in the United States. Dur- ing the week, activities such as concerts, symposiums, semi- nars, art exhibitions and much, much more were incorporated to celebrate Turkish heritage. Celebration of the Turkish American Week became richer than the previous year and participation during the 14th Annual Parade and Turkish Week broke all records. According to the New York City Police Department there were over 15,000 marchers and over 50,000 spectators lined up along Madison Avenue. This year we expect to exceed the number from last year.Groups from all over the world are now applying to join the parade and the Turkish Week activities. FEDERATION BACKGROUND AND FUNCTIONS The Federation of Turkish American Associations, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, was established in 1956 for uniting and supporting the Turkish community within the United States. Since its conception, it has successfully es- tablished a vital link between the Turkish and American communities. The Federation has evolved with the changing times and has expanded in size, membership and purpose. Ori- ginally it was established as a union of three associations. Today, the Federation is an umbrella organization consisting of over 35 member associations organizations with most these groups located in the Northeast region of the United States. Member organizations consists of associations of different ethnic, technical, and social backgrounds (eg. Azeris, Uzbek, Karacays, doctors, engineers,etc..). Each associ- ation serves to support its own members through various functions and events. The Federation operates as a conduit within the network of member organizations. All forms of technical support is provided to these associations so that they may achieve their goals at maximum efficiency levels. The Federation also strives to provide maximum exposure of Turkish culture, music, history and overall knowledge of Turkey to the U.S. public. This is achieved through cultural activities and other public relations activities throughout the United States. The Federation has a permanent full time staff. A major re- sponsibility is to provide support to the Turkish-American community throughout the United States. This support in- cludes the referral of individuals, both Turkish and non- Turkish, to qualified professionals. Other types of services rendered include the promotion of business relations between Turkish and non-Turkish companies which wish to conduct business with the Turkish community within the United States or abroad. The Federation, in its journey to unite the Turkish-American community, has expanded to a worldwide level. During 1991, the Federation of Turkish American Associations, along with sister Federations throughout the world, founded the World Turkish Congress. Throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, similar federations are working for the same goals and purposes within their respective countries. The World Turkish Congress was established to unite these feder- ations and to provide support to them in their ongoing ef- forts.
