Investing in Excellence in Teaching and Research The software development team is currently deployed in the following areas: * System Development A data model has been developed for the project which is hoped to provide a framework for storage of all our potential data. Interrogation and data extraction routines are currently being implemented. We are developing the system using UNIX and ORACLE relational database tools. Investigations are also been made as to the viability of providing a WWW access mechanism. Keeping abreast of all the current developments related to providing an online system for r cade. Much of the first six months of the project were devoted to market research from which we confirmed the need to follow developments on the Internet as well as recognising that many data services currently available used stop-gap technology. Developing documentation on all aspects of the system. This includes documenting development, implementation, management, administration, data and online usage. * Data Processing The software development team liaise with potential data providers on technical issues. The software development team advise the acquisitions officer on the technicalities of the data processing procedure. This will help ensure that all information, required by the data model, is provided and data are received in the most suitable format available. Once data are acquired, it is the teams' responsibility to establish validation procedures and input data into the r cade online and preservation systems. These tasks, including documentation, are developed within the r cade team at the ESRC Data Archive. * Office Systems Office automation is vital for the project given its cross-site distribution. The software development team is responsible for advising on the suitability of software both at Essex and at Durham. The aim is to ensure effective information distribution and the reduction of administrative overheads. * Database Administration General database administration tasks required of running ORACLE version 7.0. This includes user management, performance tuning, space management and back-up procedures. In the future this will cover both development and production systems. * Informal enquiries about the technical team can be made to: Mike Cuthbertson E-mail: Mike.Cuthbertson@durham.ac.uk Tel: 0191 374 7350 Steve Foster E-mail: Steve.Foster@durham.ac.uk Tel: 0191 374 7350
