A major part of this project involves the development of methods and tools for pan-European subject-based World Wide Web Information Gateways. The Social Science Information Gateway (SOSIG) Group at CCSS is one of the main partners and we now need to appoint two staff to assist in our project tasks. Both posts require a good knowledge of the Internet/WWW and of their use for research, excellent organisational skills and personal resourcefulness. Experience of working in a Higher Education or other research environment and a Social Science background would be useful but not essential, as would a knowledge of HTML (Hypertext Mark-up Language) or willingness to learn quickly. Both posts are expected to start by late Spring and are funded until January 1998 on an annually-renewable basis. Applicants wishing to work either full or part-time will be considered. Post No E154: Research Officer (RA2, #19848-#26430 pa) You will contribute to a review of existing methods and technologies for networked resource discovery and indexing and will follow (and to some extent co-ordinate) research and development work undertaken at partner sites in response to this review. You will liaise confidently within a complex work structure up to and including the European Commission. You will search for, assess and catalogue pan-European networked Social Science resources and will have the ability to grasp technical issues rapidly and an appreciation of the importance of quality and cataloguing in this area. You may have a library background and must have relevant work experience. Post No E155: Training Officer (Other Related grade 3, #22374-#26430 pa) Support Staff and Researchers will need to be trained to use the pilot WWW subject-based Information Gateways developed during the project (as both information providers and users). You will adapt and help to develop a modular package of generic training materials for end-users and trainers of end-users from around Europe which will be adapted for use with different subject groups. As well as having a high-level of skill and experience in preparing training materials in a computing environment, you will also have the ability to deliver hands-on training workshops in a variety of settings. Investing in Excellence in Teaching and Research The software development team is currently deployed in the following areas: * System Development A data model has been developed for the project which is hoped to provide a framework for storage of all our potential data. Interrogation and data extraction routines are currently being implemented. We are developing the system using UNIX and ORACLE relational database tools. Investigations are also been made as to the viability of providing a WWW access mechanism. Keeping abreast of all the current developments related to providing an online system for r cade. Much of the first six months of the project were devoted to market research from which we confirmed the need to follow developments on the Internet as well as recognising that many data services currently available used stop-gap technology. Developing documentation on all aspects of the system. This includes documenting development, implementation, management, administration, data and online usage. * Data Processing The software development team liaise with potential data providers on technical issues. The software development team advise the acquisitions officer on the technicalities of the data processing procedure. This will help ensure that all information, required by the data model, is provided and data are received in the most suitable format available. Once data are acquired, it is the teams' responsibility to establish validation procedures and input data into the r cade online and preservation systems. These tasks, including documentation, are developed within the r cade team at the ESRC Data Archive. * Office Systems Office automation is vital for the project given its cross-site distribution. The software development team is responsible for advising on the suitability of software both at Essex and at Durham. The aim is to ensure effective information distribution and the reduction of administrative overheads. * Database Administration General database administration tasks required of running ORACLE version 7.0. This includes user management, performance tuning, space management and back-up procedures. In the future this will cover both development and production systems. * Informal enquiries about the technical team can be made to: Mike Cuthbertson E-mail: Mike.Cuthbertson@durham.ac.uk Tel: 0191 374 7350 Steve Foster E-mail: Steve.Foster@durham.ac.uk Tel: 0191 374 7350 _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_?_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_?/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ Date: Tue, 30 Jan 1996 11:13:43 -0500 (EST) From: SilkNet Subject: JOB OPPORTUNITY - USAID in Uzbekistan JOB OPPORTUNITY USAID NIS Exchanges and Training (NET) Project, Tashkent, Uzbekistan NET Project Country Representative The Country Representative is the primary person responsible for the NET Project in Uzbekistan.
