COMPUTER CENTRE Director : Mr A P Broadbent, BSc Appointment of Computer Officer (Systems) and Network and Systems Support Officer - Further Particulars (2 posts) The Computer Centre The Computer Centre is one branch of the Information Services, comprising also Library, Media Services and Administrative Computing. Services are provided to all four campuses - Uxbridge, Runnymede, Osterley and Twickenham, the last two of which formerly comprised the West London Institute. The Computer Centre facilities assist in the University's research, teaching and administrative activities. Computer users may be students, academic staff, secretaries, technicians - a very wide range, with many different needs and interests. Supported systems are connected to the local Ethernet network and maintain a flexible, common user interface. The services are provided from Sun servers supporting standard networked PCs, multi-media PCs, high-specification UNIX workstations and other systems. There are three public user areas equipped with Sun workstations and eleven public user areas dedicated to PCs, with Suns, PCs and other systems in departments. The largest group of users is located at Uxbridge but all the University's campuses share the services via dedicated fibre optic links. The former West London Institute computer service, which was based on a Novell network with VAX servers, is in process of conversion to the University s model. The Centre's network connects to the JANET national network, allowing use of national services such as supercomputers at Manchester and databases at Bath, and thence to the Internet, giving access to international facilities. Users have access to a wide range of utilities and applications including E-mail, WWW, wordprocessors, spreadsheets, databases, and applications such as NAG, Mathematica, UNIRAS, SPSS, AutoCAD, PRO-MATLAB and ORACLE. A variety of programming languages are available, including C, C++, Perl, Fortran, Basic, Pascal, ML/1 and Prolog. The staff of the Computer Centre are organised into two sections - User Services and Technical Services. The persons appointed will work within the Systems and Networking Group of the Technical Services Section which has responsibility for installing, supporting and developing systems and networking software. The work will be associated with the UNIX operating system although, increasingly, activities performed by the Group also involve working on networked PC systems. For a limited period, the Group will continue to maintain the VAX/Novell systems set up by West London Institute. With the service almost entirely dependent on networking, systems staff need to acquire technical expertise in data communications and understand the problems of managing an extensive computer network. The Group leads in the system administration of the Centre's computing resources and is involved in the specification and acquisition of new facilities. Technical liaison with departmental system administrators and Faculty Computing Officers is an important aspect of the Group's activities. The Group also, of course, provides technical back-up for the other Computer Centre staff dealing more directly with users. All members of the Centre's staff are, from time to time, required to attend courses and conferences and to make visits in connection with their work which necessitates periods away from home. The need to interact with other members of Centre staff and with University users with varying levels of experience and expertise means that the ability to get on well with a wide range of people will be important. The Posts --------- Network and Systems Support Officer ----------------------------------- Following the merger with West London Institute, now known as Brunel University College (BUC), the University is in the process of assimilating BUC staff into its staffing structure. Until this has taken place, BUC appointments continue to be made on the existing terms and conditions, and this applies to the Network and Systems Support Officer - which is a BUC post based at Osterley and, initially, reporting to the BUC Director of Computing Services. It will be assimilated into a restructured Computing Service in due course. Our requirement is for a skilled and enthusiastic systems person who is well acquainted with PC systems - DOS and Windows, and PC networking, preferably via the PC-NFS protocol using UNIX servers. Initially, the person will be working on phasing out the VAX/Novell network and converting systems and users to the UNIX/PC-NFS networked service. Knowledge of Novell NetWare will also therefore be useful. The postholder will be involved in many phases of the network administration and will be expected to be or to become familiar with some features of the service, including UNIX, network protocols, WWW and HTML, C/C++ and PERL. Training will be available for the right person. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the programme of work set out for the Systems and Networking Group under the role defined above. Applicants should have a relevant degree qualification preferably in Science or Engineering, together with at least two years' proven experience in a computer service environment. However, candidates without a degree may be considered if their experience is sufficiently extensive to compensate.. The person appointed will be working on allocated tasks to internal Group standards and, sometimes, under direction, but will be expected and encouraged to work independently and to show initiative in assigned areas of specialisation. ___ The appointment will be on the Computing Services Range 1, between APT&C Grades S4 and P01, #12,768 - #19,013 p.a. including London Allowance of #1,183 p.a. Salaries rise by annual increments on 1 April. The first increment becomes payable after 6 months' service if appointment is between 1st November and 31st March. Hours : 36 hour week worked over 5 days. Monday - Thursday 9.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. Friday 9.00 a.m. - 4.45 p.m. 45 Minute lunch break The successful candidate must be prepared to work up to two evenings per week and a full day on alternate weekends. Time off in lieu will be given during normal working weekdays. Holiday entitlement for a full year is 28 days, increasing to 33 days after 5 years' service. All staff may contribute to the Local Government Superannuation Fund - the rate of contribution is 6% of gross salary - or may choose to make contributions to a personal pension fund, or to participate in the Government's State Earnings Related Pension Scheme (SERPS). New members of staff are subject to a probationary period of 12 months and a notice period of 1 month. Salary is paid by credit transfer on the 25th of the month, or the last weekday before the 25th. All appointments are subject to satisfactory references and medical clearance. Computer Officer (Systems) -------------------------- The Computer Officer (Systems) is a University post. It is based at the Uxbridge campus. The need is for a person with several years' experience of systems administration on a state-of-the-art, UNIX-based, distributed system. Candidates must be self-motivated and should be capable of demonstrating their success in implementing systems programming projects. A similar level of knowledge of networking administration is desirable, and experience of running a heterogeneous network will be of advantage. Skills should include programming in C or C++ and PERL. A significant element of the job will be the design and implementation of systems to allow a small team to continue to manage our fast-growing service. There are currently 12,000 registered users and over 2000 networked computers; both figures will grow by 50% during the next year because of the full integration of the West London Institute services. The post is a senior one and the person appointed will be expected to deputise when necessary for the Head of the Group. He or she will also take responsibility for some projects involving other staff of the Centre, will act as consultant on specialist areas of knowledge, and will keep in touch with technical support staff in academic departments. Experience of management of staff will be an advantage. Working in a small team like the Systems and Networking Group, it is necessary that each individual takes responsibility for different parts of the service and the persons appointed should be capable of maintaining and thoroughly documenting assigned areas of specialisation. The successful candidates will be expected to maintain awareness of developments taking place in their areas of responsibility and will frequently undertake collaboration with other staff on particular projects or activities. ___ The conditions of service which will apply are the Brunel University Professional Staff (Conditions of Service) Regulations 1978. The salary will be within the national ALC Grade 2 or 3 (#16,628 - #26,430 per annum) plus #2,166 per annum London Allowance, depending on the age, qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Annual holiday entitlement is six weeks and the University closes for a week at Christmas and Easter. The appointment may be terminated by either side giving three months' notice in writing. The appointment will be subject to a probationary period of 15 months. Appointment is subject to a satisfactory medical assessment from the University Physician. The successful candidate will be invited to join the Universities' Superannuation Scheme (USS). He/she will be required to give notice in writing prior to joining the University if he/she wish to opt for the State Earnings Related Pension (SERPS), or for an appropriate personal pension, otherwise he/she will automatically become a member of USS from commencement of his/her employment. The Computer Centre is required to provide computer services outside normal working hours. The successful applicant will be expected to work a full day on at least two weekends in four. Weekend working will be balanced by time off in lieu during weekday hours. In due course, the appointed person may expect to fulfil part of his/her duties at other sites. Removal expenses, up to a maximum of one month's salary, will be payable : "These removal expenses should include agents' fees, legal expenses, stamp duty, etc. And the cost of insurance/removal of effects but should not include the cost of items such as new carpets, curtains, etc." (Finance Committee of Council minute 194) Applications There is no application form, but along with the candidate's case for consideration, information should be given under the following headings. (1) Name, (2) Address, (3) Age, (4) Nationality, (5) Education, (6) Qualifications, (7) Experience, (8) Details of present post and salary, (9) Any supporting information or statement, (10) Names and addresses of two referees to whom confidential application can be made at this stage.
