The Turkish Army under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal, took \u0130zmir back on September 9, 1922, after a two-year war, followed by a fire which destroyed half the city. The fire was the end of an era. In the years following the<br>declaration of the Republic of Turkey on October 29, 1923, \u201cCosmopolitan Smyrna\u201d destroyed by the fire has risen from its ashes as \u201cTurkish \u0130zmir\u201d. The war that finished the most cosmopolitan city in the Ottoman Empire also<br>created the modern state of T\u00fcrkiye out of the wreckage of the Ottoman Empire. Reconstruction of \u0130zmir after the Great Fire of September 1922 was an important part of the nation-building process after the War of Independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"721\" src=\"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/izmir-fotograflari-1024x721.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-823107\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/izmir-fotograflari-1024x721.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/izmir-fotograflari-300x211.png 300w, https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/izmir-fotograflari-768x541.png 768w, https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/izmir-fotograflari.png 1333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u0130zmir now is a completely different city than what it was a century ago. The \u0130zmir of 1922 has vanished entirely and another has taken its place. As we tell the story of old \u0130zmir, we seek our past in our own memory, but we do forget, indeed.
