{"id":7290,"date":"2008-11-15T07:37:00","date_gmt":"2008-11-15T04:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/?p=7290"},"modified":"2014-01-01T20:22:24","modified_gmt":"2014-01-01T18:22:24","slug":"armenian-women-victims-of-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2008\/11\/15\/armenian-women-victims-of-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"Armenian women &#8216;victims of abuse&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_7291\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7291\" style=\"width: 226px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7291\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Greta Baghdasaryan is calling for laws protecting women<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"first\"><strong>Armenia is failing to tackle &#8220;pervasive&#8221; violence and domestic abuse against women, according to a report by rights group Amnesty International.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The group says studies estimate that <strong>&#8220;over quarter of Armenian women have been hit or beaten by a family member&#8221;. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It also warns that, according to some data, about two thirds of women may have experienced psychological abuse.<\/p>\n<p><em>The BBC has contacted the Armenian foreign ministry but has not received a response to the report. <\/em><!-- E SF --><\/p>\n<p>Amnesty calls on the Armenian authorities to provide support for women leaving violent relationships, and to draft new legislation to combat domestic violence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stigma of rape<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Women in Armenia suffer disproportionately from violence and abuse at home and at work, but this is seldom understood as a violation of their basic human rights,&#8221; says Kate Allen, director of Amnesty International UK.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The preservation of the family unit comes at the expense of women&#8217;s rights, their safety and even their lives,&#8221; says Ms Allen.<\/p>\n<p>Greta Baghdasaryan, an Armenian woman who suffered domestic violence describes how she felt &#8220;afraid of the consequences of complaining&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My neighbours saw my bruises but who will listen to them now? It never occurred to me that I could turn to the police,&#8221; Greta said.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty says its report, Countering violence in the family in Armenia, looks at case studies and the background to social attitudes among Armenians.<\/p>\n<p>It is based on testimonies from the databases of Armenian women&#8217;s organisations, reports in the Armenian media, and interviews with some women.<\/p>\n<p>It cites <strong>the stigma of rape victims and the reluctance of police to investigate domestic violence cases as hurdles. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Amnesty calls for &#8220;a real sea-change in attitudes&#8221; across Armenia, from initial protection for abused women with shelter, to the criminalisation of domestic violence. <!-- E BO --><\/p>\n<p>Source: <span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/world\/europe\/7723069.stm\">news.bbc.co.uk<\/span>, 13 November 2008<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Armenia is failing to tackle &#8220;pervasive&#8221; violence and domestic abuse against women, according to a report by rights group Amnesty International.
