I recently came across an extremely significant Islamic document that severely criticizes Turks for using religion as a cover to <\/span>killing<\/span> Armenian Christian<\/span><\/span>s<\/span>.<\/p>\n This rarely seen document is a <\/span>F<\/span>atwa or religious decree issued <\/span>in<\/span> May 1909 by Grand Sheikh Salim <\/span>a<\/span>l-Bishri of Egypt, condemning Turkish Muslims for massacring 30,000 Armenians <\/span>in <\/span>Adana<\/span>, a major city in<\/span>the Ottoman Empire<\/span>.<\/p>\n Sheikh al-Bishri of Al-Azhar Mosque, leader of the <\/span>Muslim world\u2019s <\/span>preeminent center of Islamic studies<\/span> in Cairo<\/span>, issued this <\/span>F<\/span>atwa in order to counter the decree issued <\/span>in April 1909<\/span> by a Turkish Mufti (religious leader), urging Turks to kill Armenians because \u201cthey were against Muslims and God.\u201d<\/p>\n Upon seeing a passing reference to the Egyptian fatwa on the internet, I contacted Prof. M<\/span>o<\/span>hamm<\/span>e<\/span>d R<\/span>i<\/span>faat <\/span>a<\/span>l-<\/span>E<\/span>mam, an expert on Armenian history, whom I had met during <\/span>a<\/span> recent visit to Cairo. <\/span>Dr.<\/span>a<\/span>l-<\/span>E<\/span>mam kindly sent me the original Arabic text of this important religious document<\/span>,<\/span> excerpts of which are presented below in English translation for the first time:<\/p>\n \u201cWe have seen in local newspapers agonizing news and vile reports about Muslims of some Anatolian <\/span>provinces<\/span> of the Ottoman Empire attacking Christians and killing them brutally. We could not believe these reports and hoped that they were false, because Islam forbids aggression, oppression, bloodshed, and harming human beings<\/span> —<\/span> Muslims, Christians and Jews alike.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n This document <\/span>makes it amply clear<\/span> that the Armenian massacres of 1909 and the subsequent Genocide of 1915 were not the result of religious <\/span>conflict <\/span>between Muslim Turks and Christian Armenians. The Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar rightly condemned<\/span>the Turks for the mass murder of Armenians, <\/span>which was committed for racist P<\/span>an-Tur<\/span>kic<\/span> — not <\/span>P<\/span>an-Islamic — <\/span>reasons<\/span>, <\/span>along with<\/span> the intent <\/span>of<\/span>capturing<\/span> Armenian lands and properties. The various <\/span>F<\/span>atwas issued by Turkish <\/span>Muftis (clerics)<\/span> were intended to provoke <\/span>fanatical <\/span>Turkish <\/span>mobs to attack and massacre innocent Armenians<\/span>.<\/p>\n Sheikh <\/span>a<\/span>l-Bishri\u2019s 1909 <\/span>F<\/span>atwa <\/span>was further <\/span>reinforced by the decree issued in 1917 by <\/span>A<\/span>l-Husayn Ibn Ali, the Sharif of Mecca, ordering <\/span>all Muslims<\/span> to defend Armenians and \u201cprovide everything they might need \u2026 because they are the Protected People of the Muslims about whom the Prophet Muhammad said: \u2018Whoever takes from them even a rope, I will be his adversary on the day of Judgment.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n In 2009, when Turkish Prime Minister Rejeb Erdogan stated that \u201cMuslims don\u2019t commit genocide,\u201d he was <\/span>only <\/span>partly right. He should have said: \u201c<\/span>G<\/span><\/em>ood<\/span><\/em> Muslims don\u2019t commit genocide.\u201d <\/span>The leaders of the <\/span>Young Turk<\/span>Party<\/span> who masterminded the Armenian Genocide <\/span>in 1915 were not faithful Muslims, judging by the teachings of the Quran — the Holy Book of Islam.<\/span> They were simply <\/span>criminals<\/span> who used Islam as a convenient cover to carry out <\/span>mass murder<\/span>.<\/span> The compassionate Fatwa of the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar still rings true today as the Muslim world celebrates the end of Ramadhan. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" \u00a0 I recently came across an extremely significant Islamic document that severely criticizes Turks for using religion as a cover to killing Armenian Christians. You kept your Muslim brothers away from<\/span><\/span> their religion, whose rejection became <\/span><\/span>hideous<\/span> by this heinous act, violating what is forbidden, and you let loose tongues of people ignorant of your religion to pronounce <\/span><\/span>hideous words against all Muslims. <\/span><\/div>\nThen, hear some of what your Prophet said about conditions similar to what you are in today. He said: \u2018He who kills an allied person [person joined with Islam by an agreement in order to give help and support]\u00a0will not smell the fragrance of Paradise and if he smells it, that would be at a distance of 40 years.\u2019 He also said: \u2018A person who rejects a dhimmi<\/em> [a person from Jewish and Christian minorities] will be whipped with flagella of fire on Judgment Day.\u2019\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
