Raising questions about the nature of government involvement in education, both South Korea and Turkey made news this week in relation to moves against the mainstream scientific community\u2019s support of evolution.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54280\" title=\"4484688468_16e6bd2640\" src=\"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/4484688468_16e6bd2640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/4484688468_16e6bd2640.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/4484688468_16e6bd2640-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/4484688468_16e6bd2640-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>South Korean publishers sidestepped scientific debate altogether by heeding a petition passed on to them by the government. Scientists were not consulted on the validity of any claims in the petition to \u201cdelete the \u2018error\u2019 of evolution from textbooks to \u2018correct\u2019 students\u2019 views of the world,\u201d although the petition reportedly has signatures of both scientists and teachers.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey\u2019s academia hosted its first conference for creationist ideas at Marmara University in Istanbul from May 16-17, titled \u201cWhy Does Science Deny Inter-Species Evolution?\u201d The conference highlighted proposed deficiencies in the theory of evolution, bringing some transparency to the debates and combating notions that evolution is supported and acknowledged by universities and the scientific world.<\/p>\n<p>Officially, Turkish schools are directed to teach both sides\u2013creationist and evolutionist. However, teachers enjoy great latitude in the classroom, and Kareem Cankocak, a professor at Istanbul Technical University who supports evolution, aggressively claims that 90% of incoming students either do not believe or do not know about evolutionary principles.<\/p>\n<p>As in the United States, the debate relies more upon undermining evolution than using scientific data to support creation science, continually drawing religion into the fray (Islam in Turkey and Christianity in South Korea).
