{"id":54085,"date":"2012-06-12T08:51:44","date_gmt":"2012-06-12T05:51:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/?p=54085"},"modified":"2016-12-28T16:05:00","modified_gmt":"2016-12-28T13:05:00","slug":"turkey-will-soon-announce-4-billion-missile-defense-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2012\/06\/12\/turkey-will-soon-announce-4-billion-missile-defense-decision\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey will soon announce $4 billion missile defense decision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Umit Enginsoy and Burak Ege Bekdil, Defense News: The long-range air and missile defense system, worth more than $4 billion, has attracted companies from China, Europe, Russia and the U.S. . . .<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54088\" title=\"France mod 6 11 12 missile defense.preview\" src=\"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/France-mod-6-11-12-missile-defense.preview.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/France-mod-6-11-12-missile-defense.preview.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/France-mod-6-11-12-missile-defense.preview-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The presence of Russian and Chinese competitors for the missile system has drawn security concerns from some NATO allies.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey\u2019s Defense Industry Executive Committee will meet in early July, probably July 4, on the selections and is expected to announce decisions or at least a shorter list.<\/p>\n<p>Competitors in the air and missile defense system include: U.S. partners Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, with their Patriot-based system; Eurosam with its SAMP\/T Aster 30; Russia\u2019s Rosoboronexport, marketing the country\u2019s S-300 and S-400 systems; and China\u2019s CPMIEC (China Precision Machinery Import and Export Corp.), offering its HQ-9.<\/p>\n<p>Eurosam\u2019s shareholders include MBDA \u2014 jointly owned by British BAE Systems, Italian Finmeccanica and pan-European EADS \u2014 and France\u2019s Thales. These companies will work with Turkish partners. . . .<\/p>\n<p>One Western expert countered: \u201cIf, say, the Chinese win the competition, their systems will be in interaction, directly or indirectly, with NATO\u2019s intelligence systems, and this may lead to the leak of critical NATO information to the Chinese, albeit inadvertently. So this is dangerous. . . .\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This marks the first time NATO has strongly urged Turkey against choosing the non-Western systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne explanation is that Turkey itself doesn\u2019t plan to select the Chinese or Russian alternatives eventually but still is retaining them among their options to put pressure on the Americans and the Europeans to curb their prices,\u201d the Western expert said.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey\u2019s national air and missile defense program is independent from NATO\u2019s own plans to design, develop and build a collective missile shield.
