{"id":47498,"date":"2011-12-09T08:20:03","date_gmt":"2011-12-09T06:20:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/?p=47498"},"modified":"2023-04-06T00:48:15","modified_gmt":"2023-04-05T21:48:15","slug":"turkey-sets-terms-for-backing-free-syrian-army-bow-to-muslim-brotherhood-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2011\/12\/09\/turkey-sets-terms-for-backing-free-syrian-army-bow-to-muslim-brotherhood-group\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey sets terms for backing Free Syrian Army: Bow to Muslim Brotherhood group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Special to WorldTribune.com<\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 Turkey, aligned to the Muslim Brotherhood, has cracked<\/p>\n<p>down on the rebel army in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition sources said the government of Prime Minister Recep Erdogan<\/p>\n<p>has frozen Free Syrian Army bank accounts in an effort to pressure<\/p>\n<p>the rebels to recognize the authority of the Brotherhood-aligned Syrian<\/p>\n<p>National Council.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_47500\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47500\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-47500\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan. \/Adem Altan\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe popularity of the Free Syrian Army inside Syria is a sore issue with Erdogan and the MB,\u201d the Reform Party of Syria said. \u201cFrom a strategic point of view, control of the Free Syrian Army by the MB is an essential component for which it must not fail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Washington-based opposition movement asserted that Ankara imposed sanctions on FSA on Nov. 30 after the secular rebel army refused to take orders from SNC. FSA, based in Turkey, was said to be entirely dependent on Ankara for safe haven of its fighters as well as training and logistics.<\/p>\n<p>The sources said FSA attacks on Syrian military installations and<\/p>\n<p>convoys increased the credibility of the rebel force, particularly with NATO. They said Britain and France were persuaded to cooperate with FSA, which consists of thousands of deserters from the Syrian Army.<\/p>\n<p>For its part, SNC has been strongly supported by Arab opponents of<\/p>\n<p>Assad. They were said to include Qatar and Saudi Arabia, deemed primary<\/p>\n<p>financiers of the revolt in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTensions are also rising over the little financial aid the FSA is<\/p>\n<p>getting from Saudi Arabia and Qatar whose aim is to control the organization<\/p>\n<p>to serve the MB,\u201d RPS, which supports the secular opposition, said.<\/p>\n<p>In late November, Turkey hosted the first meeting of the leadership of<\/p>\n<p>FSA and SNC. Following the session in the southwestern town of Hatay, SNC<\/p>\n<p>said FSA agreed to end all but defensive operations in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>RPS president Farid Ghadry said SNC contains elements of the Palestinian<\/p>\n<p>insurgency group Hamas. Ghadry cited Ahmed Ramadan, identified as a leading<\/p>\n<p>operative and, until May, news director of the Hamas television<\/p>\n<p>station in Beirut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAhmed Ramadan today is one of the behind-the-scene operatives of the<\/p>\n<p>SNC providing capital, logistics and advice,\u201d RPS said. \u201cThat\u2019s a known and<\/p>\n<p>public fact to many Syrians, including two RPS supporters who attended the<\/p>\n<p>first meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RPS said Turkey has directed French military aid to Islamic fighters who<\/p>\n<p>posed as defectors from FSA.
