TACCI Hosted the North American Roadshow of the Turkish Speaking Entrepreneurs Assembly<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

TACCI Hosted the North American Roadshow of the Turkish Speaking Entrepreneurs Assembly (Dunya Turk Girisimciler Kurultayi) on October 20, 2011, in New York. With the contribution of TACCI Board Member, Mr. Burak Alpaslan, the event was held at the AXA Equitable building in Manhattan. More than 70 Turkish business people attended the event that was successfully organized by TACCI, to learn more about the assembly which was held on November 18 and 19 in Istanbul, Turkey. As a result of this successful event, TACCI attended the assembly in Turkey with a delegation of 12 people. TOBB-DEIK (Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges) Chairman, Mr. Rona Yircali made a comprehensive presentation and answered the questions of the attendees. The event was covered by several important Turkish media representatives who were also present in New York at the time, and featured in major Turkish newspapers like Hurriyet. Turkish Ambassador to the UN, H.E. Ertugrul Apakan were also among the attendees and he congratulated the organizations that put together this informative event.<\/p>\n

Congress Holds Hearing on Bill to Promote Trade, Investment Between Native American Tribes and Turkish Companies<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

November 7, 2011, Washington, D.C. – On Thursday, the House Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs met to discuss\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
H.R. 2362<\/span>, the Indian Tribal Trade and Investment Act, and to hear testimony from witnesses including Turkish Coalition of America president G. Lincoln McCurdy.<\/span><\/div>\n
The subcommittee’s chairman, Rep. Don Young (R-AK), and ranking member, Rep. Dan Boren (D-OK), expressed their early support for the bill, which will facilitate Native American economic development by encouraging the development of trade and investment relationships between Native American tribes and Turkish companies.<\/span><\/div>\n
The next step in the bill’s progress toward enactment will be for the full Natural Resources Committee to hold a markup session to recommend any changes to the bill. McCurdy believes the bill has the potential to receive a full committee vote by the end of November, which would send the bill to the full House for a final vote. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
In his testimony, McCurdy emphasized that the legislation promotes job creation in areas where unemployment peaks at 80 percent, without requiring any federal funds.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
“Turkish foreign direct investment exceeded $21 billion in 2010,” McCurdy said. “The Turkish construction industry currently has 6,000 projects underway in more than 91 countries. In Egypt alone, Turkish investment has created more than 40,000 jobs.” He added that Turkey’s strong economy and its focus on foreign direct involvement puts it in a unique position to positively affect Indian Country.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
During the hearing, Representative Tom Cole (R-OK), a member of the Chickasaw Nation and the author of the bill, stressed the need to spur economic development in Indian Country. “Statistically, Indians are the most impoverished group of people in our country and suffer from the highest rates of unemployment,” he said. “Currently, economic development on tribal land is hampered by a restrictive and archaic leasing system.”\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
John Berrey, Chairman of the Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma, testified about his positive experience on the TCA-sponsored Native American Business Cooperation Trip to Turkey in November 2010.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
“I was amazed by the country, the people, and I believe this is a great opportunity not only for any country, but especially the Turkish Republic,” Berrey said. “It’s a great opportunity to forge relationships with a country that wants to be our partners. They really truly love Native Americans and it’s refreshing to have a country that’s across the globe feel that way, and anything we can do to cultivate that relationship would be fantastic.”<\/span><\/div>\n
H.R. 2362 establishes a limited demonstration project that will authorize up to six tribes or tribal consortia to partner with Turkish companies to establish commercial ties without requiring federal government approval. Turkish companies’ interest in working with Indian Country, coupled with their strengths in construction, uniquely positions them to help spur private-sector economic growth and create jobs. The activities authorized by the legislation would be funded by private-sector entities, without any expenditure of federal funds.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

On October 25,\u00a0<\/span>Turkish American Chamber of Commerce and Industry (<\/span>TACCI) organized\u00a0<\/span>an exclusive breakfast seminar with J.H. Cohn LLP<\/span>\u00a0for the members of TACCI. J.H. Cohn’s James K. Wall, principal and director of the Firm’s International Tax Services Group, and Gary Lubowiecki, senior tax manager, presented on current international tax challenges and strategies. They also answered the questions from the attendees and impressed the audience by their knowledge in the field.\u00a0<\/span>Mehmet Sengulen, CPA, TACCI member and a senior manager at J.H. Cohn, was the host of the seminar. This free member event attracted more than 50 attendees.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>Turkey, Azerbaijan Sign Landmark Gas Transit Agreement (Source: USACC)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Turkey and Azerbaijan on Tuesday signed a long-awaited agreement to allow the transit of some 10 billion cubic meters of Azeri natural gas to Europe, resolving one of the final obstacles preventing the opening of a southern corridor to allow gas to flow from the Caspian to the EU.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Turkish energy ministry spokesman said Tuesday the agreement has now been signed, although no details on the exact terms were available<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

During his trip to Washington D.C., Hisarc\u0131kl\u0131o\u011flu attended American-Turkish Council (ATC) and DE\u0130K\/Turkish American Business Council’s (TA\u0130K) 30th annual conference. In his remarks at the event, Hisarc\u0131kl\u0131o\u011flu recognized the half-century-old Turkish-American relations, and called for their continued development.<\/span>He also\u00a0met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Washington D.C. Hisarc\u0131kl\u0131o\u011flu informed Clinton about the “Istanbul Forum for Economic Cooperation” involving Turkey, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and invited Clinton to the meeting of the entrepreneur women from Turkey, Afghanistan and Pakistan. \u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n
