{"id":46763,"date":"2011-11-17T03:08:07","date_gmt":"2011-11-17T01:08:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/?p=46763"},"modified":"2014-01-06T17:53:32","modified_gmt":"2014-01-06T15:53:32","slug":"thousands-of-kuwaitis-storm-parliament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2011\/11\/17\/thousands-of-kuwaitis-storm-parliament\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands of Kuwaitis storm parliament"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Protesters storm building after police beat demonstrators calling for assembly&#8217;s dissolution amid claims of corruption.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8221;]<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-46764 \" title=\"al-Sabah\" src=\"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/al-Sabah.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"408\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/al-Sabah.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/al-Sabah-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><strong>Thousands of Kuwaitis have stormed parliamentary buildings after police and elite forces beat protesters.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The protesters marched earlier on Wednesday to Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad Al-Sabah&#8217;s home to demand his resignation, an opposition MP said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Now, we have entered the house of the people,&#8221;<\/strong> said Mussallam al-Barrak, who led the protest along with several other\u00a0politicians and youth activists also calling for the dissolution of parliament over alleged corruption.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrators broke open the parliament&#8217;s gates and entered the main chamber, where they sang the national anthem and left after a few minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The police had used batons to prevent protesters from marching to the residence of the prime minister, a senior member of the ruling family, after staging a rally outside parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses said at least five demonstrators were injured and treated on the site.<\/p>\n<p>Some activists said they will continue to camp outside parliament until the\u00a0prime minister\u00a0is sacked.<\/p>\n<p>Doctor\u00a0Fahad al-khanna, a former member of parliament, told Al Jazeera:<strong> &#8220;We have already been out in the streets protesting peacefully, we will not abandon our country to a bunch of\u00a0corrupt thieves,\u00a0we are urgently calling for an early\u00a0parliamentary election in the country.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Calls to resign<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tension has been building in Kuwait over the past three months after it was\u00a0alleged that about 16 MPs in the 50-member parliament received about $350m in bribes.<\/p>\n<p>The opposition has been leading a campaign to oust the premier, whom they accuse of failing to run the wealthy nation and fight corruption, which has become widespread.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Wednesday, about 20 opposition\u00a0opposition boycotted a parliamentary session, a day after the government and its supporters succeeded in rejecting a bid by the opposition to quiz the premier over allegations of corruption.<\/p>\n<p>After the rejection, three opposition MPs filed a fresh request<br \/>\nto question\u00a0the prime minister\u00a0over allegations of\u00a0fraud involving MPs and illegal overseas money transfers.<\/p>\n<p>The premier, 71, has been a target of opposition criticism since he was appointed to the job in February 2006, forcing him to resign six times.<\/p>\n<p>Parliament has also been dissolved three times in the same period.<\/p>\n<p>www.aljazeera.com, 16.11.2011<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Protesters storm building after police beat demonstrators calling for assembly&#8217;s dissolution amid claims of corruption.
