{"id":43956,"date":"2011-09-17T13:57:29","date_gmt":"2011-09-17T10:57:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishforum.com.tr\/en\/content\/?p=43956"},"modified":"2023-04-04T07:00:09","modified_gmt":"2023-04-04T04:00:09","slug":"turkeys-erdogan-angers-egypts-muslim-brotherhood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2011\/09\/17\/turkeys-erdogan-angers-egypts-muslim-brotherhood\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey\u2019s Erdogan angers Egypt\u2019s Muslim Brotherhood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Joseph Mayton<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43959\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43959\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43959\" title=\"Erdogan-Cairo1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Erdogan-Cairo1.jpg\" alt=\"Erdogan was well received in Egypt during his trip.\" width=\"260\" height=\"198\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43959\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Erdogan was well received in Egypt during his trip.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>CAIRO: Egypt\u2019s Muslim Brotherhood this week showed one of the few signs of anger toward Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan\u2019s visit to the country, lashing out at his calls for Egypt to be a secular state and form a constitution based on those principles.<\/p>\n<p>During his two-day visit to Egypt, Turkey\u2019s PM was outspoken in his belief that Egypt could be a moderate Islamic country much like his own Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of Egyptians gathered to welcome the Turkish leader, who won widespread support for his expulsion of the Israeli ambassador to Ankara and the cutting off of diplomatic ties with the Jewish state.<\/p>\n<p>Brotherhood spokesman Mahmoud Ghozlan said in a statement released by the Islamic group that Erdogan\u2019s comments constituted foreign intervention into Egypt\u2019s internal issues.<\/p>\n<p>He said that it would be impossible to apply Turkey\u2019s political reality to Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>Erdogan said on the television program that \u201ca secular state does not mean that the people are atheists, it means respect for all religions and each individual has the freedom to practice his own religion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that \u201c99 percent of the population in Turkey are Muslims, there are Christians, Jews and minorities, but the state treats them equally and this is recognized by Islam and has been true throughout Islamic history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Essam el-Erian, deputy leader of the Brotherhood\u2019s Freedom and Justice party said, \u201cwe welcome Turkey and we welcome Erdogan as a prominent leader but we do not think that he or his country alone should be leading the region or drawing up its future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the criticism, many younger members of the Brotherhood have for a number of years, pushed for greater reforms internally within the group in an effort to promote many ideas similar to the Turkish model, which has enabled an Islamic government to take power.<\/p>\n<p>BM<\/p>\n<p>ShortURL: <\/p>\n<p>via Turkey\u2019s Erdogan angers Egypt\u2019s Muslim Brotherhood &#8211; Bikya Masr : Bikya Masr.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joseph Mayton CAIRO: Egypt\u2019s Muslim Brotherhood this week showed one of the few signs of anger toward Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan\u2019s visit to the country, lashing out at his calls for Egypt to be a secular state and form a constitution based on those principles.
