{"id":37406,"date":"2011-07-07T14:24:43","date_gmt":"2011-07-07T11:24:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishforum.com.tr\/en\/content\/?p=37406"},"modified":"2023-04-27T14:09:24","modified_gmt":"2023-04-27T11:09:24","slug":"erdogan-intensifies-turkish-effort-to-join-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2011\/07\/07\/erdogan-intensifies-turkish-effort-to-join-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"Erdogan intensifies Turkish effort to join EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan reshuffled his cabinet yesterday, retaining Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek to manage the overheating economy and creating a new ministry to press Turkey&#8217;s campaign to join the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Under Mr Erdogan, whose AK Party won an unprecedented third term in office in elections last month, Turkey has been transformed into one of the world&#8217;s fastest-growing economies, but there are calls for his government to tighten fiscal and monetary policy.<\/p>\n<p>Egemen Bagis, Turkey&#8217;s chief negotiator for EU membership, was appointed head of the newly created European Union ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Erdogan has also said he wants to work with the opposition to write a new constitution.
