{"id":29345,"date":"2010-12-19T19:43:41","date_gmt":"2010-12-19T17:43:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishforum.com.tr\/en\/content\/?p=29345"},"modified":"2014-01-06T00:37:45","modified_gmt":"2014-01-05T22:37:45","slug":"erdogan-says-we-still-feel-the-pain-of-karbala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2010\/12\/19\/erdogan-says-we-still-feel-the-pain-of-karbala\/","title":{"rendered":"Erdogan says we still feel the pain of Karbala"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tehran Times Political Desk<\/p>\n<p>ISTANBUL &#8211; Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and former Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Velayati attended an Ashura ceremony in Turkey on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29347\" src=\"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/01_EP38.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/01_EP38.jpg 595w, https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/01_EP38-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Velayati, who is currently a senior advisor of Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader, attended the ceremony in Istanbul on the invitation of the leader of Turkey\u2019s Shia Muslims, Salah al-Din Ozgunduz.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of Turkish Shia braved freezing temperatures to commemorate the day of Ashura, which is the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his 72 companions, with a procession through the streets of Istanbul.<\/p>\n<p>Erdogan attended the ceremony this year for the first time since his AK party came to power in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Erdogan, who is a follower of the Hanafi school of the Sunni branch of Islam, delivered a speech at the ceremony, in which he discussed the importance of unity between Shia and Sunni Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been feeling the pain of Karbala for 1,370 years. We have to feel that pain in our hearts. We remember (Imam) Hussein (AS) whenever an innocent person is killed,\u201d the Turkish prime minister said as he began his speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis country is ours, these lands are all ours, this history, this civilization is ours. Nobody can claim superiority to any other. We are equal to each other and we are all brothers in these lands. We are all first-class citizens of this country. The problems of all religious groups in my country are mine. That&#8217;s why we are struggling to address century-old problems through consensus. Aren\u2019t there those who oppose us? Of course, there are. But we will overcome this with patience,\u201d Erdogan added.<\/p>\n<p>Erdogan\u2019s participation in Ashura ceremony is a sign of Islamic unity<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the Ashura mourners in Istanbul, Velayati described Erdogan\u2019s participation in the ceremony as an extremely significant symbol of Islamic unity.<\/p>\n<p>He also pointed to Turkey\u2019s role in defending Islamic values and foiling plots against Muslim countries.<\/p>\n<p>Ashura symbolizes unity among Muslims, justice, devotion, and the struggle against oppression, Velayati added.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that all Muslims shoulder the responsibility of defending the principles of Islam and fighting against the enemies.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in his remarks, Velayati commented on the Palestine issue and called on all Muslims to stand with the Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Velayati held a meeting with Erdogan in which they discussed the latest regional and international developments as well as issues of mutual interest<\/p>\n<p>via tehran times : Erdogan says we still feel the pain of Karbala.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tehran Times Political Desk ISTANBUL &#8211; Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and former Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Velayati attended an Ashura ceremony in Turkey on Thursday.
