{"id":28576,"date":"2010-12-09T02:44:14","date_gmt":"2010-12-09T00:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishforum.com.tr\/en\/content\/?p=28576"},"modified":"2014-01-06T00:25:47","modified_gmt":"2014-01-05T22:25:47","slug":"mastercard-endures-turks-wrath-for-genocide-reference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2010\/12\/09\/mastercard-endures-turks-wrath-for-genocide-reference\/","title":{"rendered":"MasterCard Endures Turks\u2019 Wrath for Genocide Reference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LOS ANGELES\u2013The US Consulate General in Istanbul was forced to mediate when in 2005 Turkish authorities accused MasterCard of \u201cInsulting Turkishness\u201d after the credit giant published a visitor\u2019s guide to Istanbul, in which it made references to Kurdish aspirations for independence and the Armenian Genocide, newly-published State Department cables leaked by WikiLeaks revealed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28579\" src=\"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/MasterCard.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"638\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/MasterCard.jpg 638w, https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/MasterCard-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>MasterCard, which was a corporate sponsor of the UEFA Champions League Cup Final between Istanbul and Liverpool, published a 290-page \u201cLonely Planet\u201d guide on the host city and distributed it to visiting athletes and fans. In the guide, the author, an Istanbul-based British journalist depicted Istanbul as a city with an \u201cEastern\u201d mentality and made references to the Kurds and Armenians. It\u2019s offices received death threats and protests and, as a result, forced to close to protect its employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe breezy narrative noted that \u2018Ataturk banned any expression of Kurdishness in an\u00a0attempt at assimilation,\u2019 adding that major battles and atrocities followed in the 1920s and 1930s, with the deaths of more than 30,000 coming since 1984,\u201d reported the cable written by David Arnett, the then US Consul General in Istanbul.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the equally sensitive Armenian issue, the guide noted that while most Armenians had remained loyal to the Ottoman Empire, some had rebelled,\u201d explained Arnett in his cable, adding that the so-called rebellion \u201cset off a powerful anti-Armenian backlash and the \u2018widespread massacre of innocent Armenians in Istanbul and elsewhere.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>On June 5, 2005, the Hurriyet Daily News reported that \u201cMasterCard Europe\u2019s CEO Alexander Labak sent a letter of apology to the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism over the guide, which the company claims was mostly written by the Lonely Planet UK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the sensitivities that exist here, inclusion of any material on topics such as Turkey\u2019s minority policy or the Armenian tragedy in a sporting guide was in retrospect a serious mistake. The harsh, instinctive reaction, however, shows the heightened sensitivities and hair-trigger nature of public discourse here since the December 17th EU decision [Asbaerz: The 2004 decision by the European Council decision to begin talks of Turkey\u2019s membership in EU].
