Call For Papers
\nInternational Conference on Armenia and Armenians in International Treaties<\/p>\n

The Armenian Studies Program (ASP) at the University of Michigan, Ann
\nArbor<\/span>, will be convening an international conference on the theme
\nArmenia and Armenians in International Treaties. The conference will
\nbe held on the campus of the University of Michigan<\/span>, March 18-21, 2009.<\/p>\n

International treaties represent critical moments in the history of
\nArmenia<\/span> and of the Armenian people that had serious implications for
\ntheir status and future as well as that of neighboring peoples and
\ncountries. International treaties also constitute the linchpin of
\ndiplomatic history, an aspect of Armenian history that has been
\nneglected. The purpose of the conference is to determine patterns and
\nprocesses which might shed light on the challenges faced by Armenia
\nand Armenians in their long history.<\/p>\n

For the purposes of this conference the term treaties will include
\nalso international agreements such as the one between the Armenian
\nmerchants of India<\/span> and the British East India Company<\/span> in 1688 or the
\nMay 1896 agreement regarding the Eastern provinces of the Ottoman Empire.<\/p>\n

Scholars interested in the subject of Armenian diplomatic history from
\nearliest times to the present are invited to submit abstracts for
\ntheir proposed papers on the theme to Ms. Gloria Caudill, ASP
\nAdministrator, (gcaudill@umich.edu<\/span><\/span>) by Friday, October 3, 2008. ASP
\nwill notify scholars regarding the acceptance of their proposal by the
\nend of October, 2008. Final papers should be submitted two weeks
\nbefore the conference, by February 18<\/span>, 2009. The papers will be made
\navailable to all participants in order to limit presentations during
\nthe conference to 20 minutes per participant and provide time for
\ndiscussion during panels.<\/p>\n

The conference will begin with a reception on the evening of
\nWednesday, March 18, followed by three full days of panels. The
\nconference will be webcast live internationally. Professor Gerard
\nLibaridian is the main convener of the conference.<\/p>\n

The language of the conference will be English, although presentations
\nin Armenian as well as in French, Russian and Spanish will be accepted
\nas long as the presenter can provide an English translation of the
\npaper two weeks before the conference<\/p>\n

ASP will cover all expenses related to travel, lodging and meals for
\nparticipants.<\/p>\n
