Proposed NATO defense shield in Turkey highly suspicious: Iran<\/p>\n

TEHRAN \u2013 A proposal by NATO to establish a new ballistic missile defense shield in Turkey is \u201cseriously suspicious\u201d, the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe think NATO\u2019s aim to deploy military forces in the region is seriously suspicious,\u201d Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told a weekly press briefing.<\/p>\n

Mehmanparast added, \u201cWe think the stationing of NATO military forces would disrupt security in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to say that the regional countries are able to maintain their own security and \u201cthey have no need to foreigners\u201d.<\/p>\n

At a meeting last week, NATO members discussed a proposal presented by the United States to establish a new ballistic missile defense shield in Turkey.<\/p>\n

Turkish officials say they will analyze and deliberate on all the possible outcomes and implications of the proposed plan before reaching a decision.<\/p>\n

Iran confirms financial assistance to Afghanistan<\/p>\n

After President Hamid Karzai admitted receiving aid from Iran a Foreign Ministry official in Tehran confirmed that the Islamic Republic gives aid to Afghanistan in reconstructing the war-ravaged country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Islamic Republic of Iran, as a neighboring country is deeply concerned about Afghanistan\u2019s stability, and has given much assistance for the reconstruction of Afghanistan,\u201d Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Islamic Republic of Iran has done its part in helping Afghanistan rebuild and develop its economy and will do so in the future,\u201d Mehmanparast explained.<\/p>\n

Karzai insisted at a news conference in Kabul on Monday that the payments to his chief of staff were transparent payments for his presidential office.<\/p>\n

The New York Times reported on Saturday that Karzai\u2019s chief of staff, Umar Daudzai, received regular cash payments from Iran.<\/p>\n

Karzai angrily denied that the payments were secret.<\/p>\n

Cash payments \u201care done by various friendly countries to help the president\u2019s office\u2026 this is transparent,\u201d Karzai said Monday, according to AFP.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is nothing hidden. We are grateful for Iranian help in this regard. The United States is doing the same thing. They\u2019re providing cash to some of our offices.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said Iran has assisted his government with up to 700,000 euros once or twice a year in the form of official aid.<\/p>\n
