{"id":23810,"date":"2010-10-19T03:24:32","date_gmt":"2010-10-19T01:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishforum.com.tr\/en\/content\/?p=23810"},"modified":"2014-01-05T21:11:55","modified_gmt":"2014-01-05T19:11:55","slug":"turkey-tells-nato-iran-and-syria-arent-enemies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2010\/10\/19\/turkey-tells-nato-iran-and-syria-arent-enemies\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey tells NATO Iran and Syria aren&#8217;t enemies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-23811\" src=\"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/swastika_gamalihac.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"146\" \/>Turkey has given conditional approval to the deployment of a NATO missile shield on its soil, provided that the deployment&#8217;s official papers\u00a0don&#8217;t name Iran and Syria as enemies.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Turkey indicated Thursday during a meeting of NATO ministers that it could approve the deployment of a proposed U.S.-led anti-missile system on Turkish soil, though it expressed reservations about the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe demanded that Iran and Syria not be cited as \u2018threats\u2019 in NATO\u2019s official documents on the planned defensive shield,\u201d Turkish Foreign Ministry officials told the H\u00fcrriyet Daily News &amp; Economic Review on Friday. \u201cAlso, the deployment of the shield should cover the territory of all NATO allies, as well as the entire territory of Turkey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Ankara told the U.S. officials that if defense is the purpose of the system, no nations should be named in NATO documents as targets, since that would provoke those countries, according to the same diplomatic sources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn that case, Turkey could face problems with its neighbors due to the missile shield,\u201d diplomatic sources told the Daily News.<\/p>\n<p>The technical discussions on the issue will continue until the NATO summit Nov. 19-20 in Brussels, where a decision is expected to be made.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I suppose that Iran and Syria aren&#8217;t threats to Turkey, although they are threats to just about every other country in NATO.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the missile shield should be deployed someplace else.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/israelmatzav.blogspot.com\/2010\/10\/turkey-tells-nato-iran-and-syria-arent.html<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Turkey has given conditional approval to the deployment of a NATO missile shield on its soil, provided that the deployment&#8217;s official papers\u00a0don&#8217;t name Iran and Syria as enemies.
