Gul calls ‘Marmara’ raid an “unacceptable act in international law,”; calls on Israel to put an end to the “humanitarian tragedy in Gaza.\u201d<\/h2>\n

NEW YORK \u2013 Addressing the General Assembly at the United Nations on Thursday, Turkish President Abdullah Gul referenced the May 31\u00a0Gaza<\/span> flotilla incident and demanded both a formal apology from\u00a0Israel<\/span> as well as compensation for the victims.<\/p>\n

Calling the deaths on the\u00a0Mavi Marmara\u00a0an \u201cunacceptable act in international law,\u201d Gul said Turkey is owed \u201ca formal apology and compensation for the aggrieved families of the victims and the injured people\u201d by Israel.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gul referenced the flotilla incident in part of his remarks focusing on the political component of the General Assembly\u2019s agenda, noting that there is \u201cno shortage of regional issues\u201d to be discussed.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeace in the Middle East holds the key to a peaceful and stable future in the world,\u201d<\/strong> Gul said, addressing the body in English.\u00a0 \u201cUnfortunately, the absence of peace there has had serious and adverse consequences for the rest of the world.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

It would be difficult to make progress toward permanent peace, Gul said, \u201cunless we put an end to the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gul attached significance to UN Secretary General\u00a0Ban Ki-Moon<\/span>\u2019s Panel of Inquiry into the May 31 flotilla incident, as well as the fact finding mission of the Geneva-based Human Rights Council.<\/p>\n

Gul said he is \u201cpleased\u201d with the\u00a0Human Rights Council report<\/span>, which he said offered \u201ca solid legal framework for establishing the facts about the incident.\u201d Many NGOs, including UN Watch and NGO Monitor, have deemed the work of the Human Rights Council panel irreparably biased against Israel.<\/p>\n

Referencing Iran very briefly, Gul said there is \u201cno alternative to diplomacy\u201d in ensuring Iran\u2019s conformity to International\u00a0 Atomic Energy Agency norms.<\/p>\n
