{"id":21834,"date":"2010-09-06T12:36:28","date_gmt":"2010-09-06T10:36:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishforum.com.tr\/en\/content\/?p=21834"},"modified":"2023-07-26T10:58:00","modified_gmt":"2023-07-26T07:58:00","slug":"protester-attempts-citizens-arrest-on-blair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2010\/09\/06\/protester-attempts-citizens-arrest-on-blair\/","title":{"rendered":"Protester attempts citizen&#8217;s arrest on Blair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>An anti-war campaigner has attempted to make a citizen&#8217;s arrest on former prime minister Tony Blair over alleged war crimes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Activist Kate O&#8217;Sullivan managed to get through tight security to confront Mr Blair as he held a book signing in Dublin.<\/p>\n<p>The 24-year-old from Cork claims to have queued for 90 minutes and went through airport style security &#8211; handing in all her belongings and going through a metal detector &#8211; before she attempted to arrest Mr Blair.<\/p>\n<p>She says the former Prime was blas\u00e9 about her accusations: &#8220;He didn&#8217;t say anything, He just signed the book, he looked down and then looked at security.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms O&#8217;Sullivan, a member of the Irish Palestine Solidarity Movement, was detained for almost half an hour before she was cautioned by gardai.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, shoes and eggs had been pelted at Mr Blair as he arrived at the bookshop on O&#8217;Connell Street in Dublin city centre.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"http:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/4\/20100904\/tuk-protester-attempts-citizen-s-arrest-dba1618.html\">ITN<\/span><\/p>\n<address><strong>A website offered \u00a0reward For Tony Blair&#8217;s Arrest earlier this year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UK, Wednesday January 27, 2010<\/p>\n<h1>Website Offers Reward For Tony Blair&#8217;s Arrest<\/h1>\n<h2>A website offering a reward to people who try to arrest former Prime Minister Tony Blair for alleged &#8220;crimes against peace&#8221; has raised over \u00a39,000 in just two days.<\/h2>\n<p>The website, called\u00a0<strong>Arrest Blair<\/strong>, was launched on January 25 &#8211; just four days before he was due to give evidence to the Chilcott inquiry into the Iraq war.<\/p>\n<p>It was created by writer George Monbiot, an environmental and political activist who has a weekly column in The Guardian newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>Launching the website, he wrote: &#8220;We must show that we have not, as Blair requested, &#8216;moved on&#8217; from Iraq, that we are not prepared to allow his crime to remain unpunished.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The website stipulates the citizen&#8217;s arrest must be peaceful and that anyone attempting it will be paid a quarter of the money donated &#8211; currently just over \u00a39,200.<\/p>\n<p>It also states there must be no injuries to Mr Blair or those around him and that the incident must be reported in &#8220;at least one mainstream media outlet in a bulletin, programme or article&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone claiming the reward must also prove they are the person featured in the report and come forward within 28 days of the attempt.<\/p>\n<p>For people who have not carried out a citizens arrest in the past, the website offers advice on how to go about it, including handling police.<\/p>\n<p>They are recommended to approach Mr Blair &#8220;calmly&#8221;, and &#8220;in a gentle fashion to lay a hand on his shoulder or elbow, in such a way that he cannot have any cause to complain of being hurt&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They are urged to loudly announce: &#8220;Mr Blair, this is a citizens&#8217; arrest for a crime against peace, namely your decision to launch an unprovoked war against Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am inviting you to accompany me to a police station to answer the charge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr Monbiot<\/strong>, 47, said although any arrests would be &#8220;largely symbolic&#8221; they would nonetheless have &#8220;great political resonance&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8220;There must be no hiding place for those who have committed crimes against peace.
