Deputies from Turkey\u2019s ruling party have voted down a proposal to name a new university in \u0130zmir after Z\u00fcbeyde Han\u0131m, mother of the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atat\u00fcrk.<\/p>\n
During a debate Tuesday evening in Parliament,\u00a0the name \u201cZ\u00fcbeyde Han\u0131m\u201d was proposed for one of the eight new universities around the country to be established under a recent draft law.<\/p>\n
Parliament convened to debate the new draft and decided that the university would be named \u201cKatip \u00c7elebi\u201d instead.<\/p>\n
During the debate Tuesday before the draft passed, B\u00fclent Baratal\u0131 and seven deputies of the Republican People\u2019s Party, or CHP, proposed a resolution for the naming of the new university in \u0130zmir \u201cZ\u00fcbeyde Han\u0131m University.\u201d<\/p>\n
Education Minister Nimet \u00c7ubuk\u00e7u, however, expressed her disagreement with the CHP proposal.<\/p>\n
CHP deputy Baratal\u0131 pointed out that \u0130zmir currently has seven universities and the new university in question was initially named \u201cTurgut Reis,\u201d but this name was later changed to \u201cKatip \u00c7elebi\u201d by Parliament\u2019s Planning and Budgeting Commission.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor the first time, a university in Turkey would have been named after a woman. At the time the founder of the nation, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atat\u00fcrk, was installed as president, he bore the title of parliamentary deputy \u2013 from \u0130zmir,\u201d Baratal\u0131 said. \u201cHis wife was from \u0130zmir and he laid his mother to rest in \u0130zmir \u2013 her grave is in [the local district of] Kar\u015f\u0131yaka. For that reason, we, the people of \u0130zmir, owe this homage to the founder of our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Justice and Development Party, or AKP, members, however, rejected the resolution proposed by the CHP deputy, and the new university will be named after \u00c7elebi, an Ottoman scientist who lived between 1608 and 1656.<\/p>\n
