{"id":20655,"date":"2010-07-12T01:11:12","date_gmt":"2010-07-11T23:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishforum.com.tr\/en\/content\/?p=20655"},"modified":"2014-01-05T19:58:52","modified_gmt":"2014-01-05T17:58:52","slug":"cypriot-hotel-threatens-to-sue-j-lo-for-40m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2010\/07\/12\/cypriot-hotel-threatens-to-sue-j-lo-for-40m\/","title":{"rendered":"Cypriot Hotel Threatens To Sue J.Lo For $40m"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>A luxury hotel in northern Cyprus has threatened to sue pop star Jennifer Lopez for $40m (\u00a327m) after she cancelled a gig there for &#8220;political&#8221; reasons.<\/h4>\n<p>But newspapers in the Turkish-occupied territory said the hotel owner has offered J.Lo an olive branch, saying there is still time to reverse her decision.<\/p>\n<p>The singer had been due to perform on July 24 at the\u00a0<strong>Cratos Premium<\/strong> hotel and casino complex &#8211; but the booking outraged Greek Cypriots in the south of the island nation.<\/p>\n<p>They claimed that performing in the disputed north would be tantamount to making a political statement and the singer was deluged with thousands of letters of protest.<\/p>\n<p>A Facebook site against the concert signed up almost 20,000 members within a week.<\/p>\n<p>In backing out of the concert, a spokesperson for J.Lo told celebrity gossip website TMZ: &#8220;<span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"http:\/\/indepth.news.sky.com\/InDepth\/topic\/JLo\"><strong>Jennifer Lopez<\/strong><\/span> would never knowingly support any state, country, institution or regime that was associated with any form of human rights abuse.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After a full review of the relevant circumstances in Cyprus, it was the decision of management to withdraw from the appearance. This was a team decision that reflects our sensitivity to the political realities of the region.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet Feza Firat, whose Istanbul-based F&amp;F Agency represents the Cratos hotel, claims Lopez had been &#8220;led to believe there was a war going on&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Firat went on to say the singer&#8217;s fee had already been paid.<\/p>\n<p>The US-based\u00a0<span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"http:\/\/ahepa.org\/dotnetnuke\/\"><strong>American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association<\/strong><\/span> claimed the concert would &#8220;lend credence to an illegal entity recognised only by Turkey&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey occupied the north to try and stop Nicosia uniting with Greece.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"http:\/\/www.trncinfo.com\/tanitmadairesi\/2002\/ENGLISH\/HISTORY\/PAGE01.htm\"><strong>Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus<\/strong><\/span> is only recognised by Turkey and has been a significant political barrier to Turkey being allowed to join the EU.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"http:\/\/news.sky.com\/skynews\/Home\/World-News\/Jennifer-Lopez-Threatened-With-40m-Lawsuit-After-Pulling-Out-Of-Turkish-Cypriot-Gig\/Article\/201007215663190?lpos=World_News_First_World_News_Article_Teaser_Region_4&amp;lid=ARTICLE_15663190_Jennifer_Lopez_Threatened_With_$40m_Lawsuit_After_Pulling_Out_Of_Turkish-Cypriot_Gig\">The SkyNews<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A luxury hotel in northern Cyprus has threatened to sue pop star Jennifer Lopez for $40m (\u00a327m) after she cancelled a gig there for &#8220;political&#8221; reasons.
