{"id":2011,"date":"2008-08-05T22:55:08","date_gmt":"2008-08-05T19:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/?p=2011"},"modified":"2008-08-05T22:55:08","modified_gmt":"2008-08-05T19:55:08","slug":"the-sultans-nose-caricatures-from-turkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2008\/08\/05\/the-sultans-nose-caricatures-from-turkey\/","title":{"rendered":"The Sultan&#8217;s Nose &#8211; Caricatures from Turkey"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre style=\"13px;\">Exhibition at the Museum der Weltkulturen Frankfurt\r\nAugust 9, 2008 to November 16, 2008\r\n\r\nOrganizer:\r\nDiYALOG in cooperation with the Museum der Weltkulturen and\r\nFriedrich-Ebert-Foundation\r\n\r\nMuseum of World Cultures, Schaumainkai 37, Frankfurt am Main, Germany\r\n\r\nOn August 8, on the occasion of the Book Fair, the Museum of World\r\nCultures in Frankfurt will open the exhibition \"The Sultan's Nose -\r\nCaricatures from Turkey.\"\r\n\r\nThis exhibition has been initiated and organized by the Turkish Cultural\r\nInitiative DIYALOG in cooperation with the Museum of World Cultures, the\r\nTurkish branch of the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation, and with support from\r\nthe Organizing Committee of the Frankfurt Book Fair 2008.\r\n\r\nSince the debate on the Muhammad caricatures that were published in\r\nDenmark, Europeans have been engaged with the question of caricature and\r\nhumour in the Muslim world. Presenting a selection of old and new examples\r\nof Turkish caricatures, the exhibition aims to show the central role\r\nsatire has played as a form of socio-political argument since the time of\r\nthe Ottoman sultans in Turkey.\r\n\r\nThe exhibition includes work by caricaturists who are regarded as\r\nclassics in Turkey, first during the late Ottoman period and moving\r\nforward to the 1950s with work by graphic artists like Turhan Sel\u00e7uk\r\nand Tan Oral. Simultaneously, the exhibition shows for the first time\r\nin Germany a selection of works by today's generation of Turkish\r\ncaricaturists. Works come from saucy and\/or satirical political daily\r\nnewspapers and magazines such as \"LeMan,\" \"Penguen\" and \"Uykusuz.\"\r\n\r\nThe exhibition will be accompanied by a publication on the history of\r\nTurkish caricatures.
