{"id":18738,"date":"2010-04-27T20:30:27","date_gmt":"2010-04-27T18:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishforum.com.tr\/en\/content\/?p=18738"},"modified":"2023-04-06T15:44:36","modified_gmt":"2023-04-06T12:44:36","slug":"eu-pleased-with-armenian-caution-on-turkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2010\/04\/27\/eu-pleased-with-armenian-caution-on-turkey\/","title":{"rendered":"EU \u2018Pleased\u2019 With Armenian Caution On Turkey"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gdb.rferl.org\/9230E14B-1BB6-426C-AC4C-3679E759DAF7_w527_s.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Belgium -- EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Catherine Ashton holds a news conference after a EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels, 22Mar2010\" \/>Belgium &#8212; EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Catherine Ashton holds a news conference after a EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels, 22Mar2010<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>27.04.2010<\/div>\n<p>The European Union on Tuesday welcomed Armenia\u2019s decision not to walk away from its fence-mending agreements with Turkey, while expressing concern about \u201cthe loss of momentum in this process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EU\u2019s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, Catherine Ashton, also reaffirmed through a spokesperson the bloc\u2019s support for an unconditional and speedy ratification of the Turkish-Armenian protocols sought by Yerevan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe High Representative is pleased to note that Armenia remains committed to pursue the process of normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations but at the same time expresses concern about the loss of momentum in this process,\u201d the unnamed spokesperson said in a statement circulated by the EU delegation in Yerevan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe EU reiterates its call to both countries to continue their dialogue and remain committed to the process of normalization without preconditions and in a reasonable timeframe,\u201d said the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Germany, a key EU member state, also praised President Serzh Sarkisian for not formally ending the normalization process, in a separate statement released by its ambassador in Yerevan, Hans-Jochen Schmidt. \u201cWe greatly welcome that,\u201d said Schmidt.<\/p>\n<p>France, another EU heavyweight, as well as the United States reacted to Sarkisian\u2019s move in a similar fashion late last week. \u201cWe applaud President Sarkisian&#8217;s decision to continue to work towards a vision of peace, stability, and reconciliation,\u201d said U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon.<\/p>\n<p>Both the U.S. and the EU have essentially shared Yerevan\u2019s view that Armenia and Turkey should normalize relations regardless of decisive progress in international efforts to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
