{"id":16819,"date":"2010-02-09T11:34:43","date_gmt":"2010-02-09T11:34:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishforum.com.tr\/en\/content\/?p=16819"},"modified":"2013-10-10T11:48:43","modified_gmt":"2013-10-10T08:48:43","slug":"revealing-institutional-racism-in-the-workplace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2010\/02\/09\/revealing-institutional-racism-in-the-workplace\/","title":{"rendered":"Revealing institutional racism in the workplace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">TWO reports published by the<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">TUC\u2019s Stephen Lawrence Task<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">Group in December and<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">January reveal how institutional<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">racism in the workplace excludes<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">black and Asian people from job<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">opportunities, and prevents them from<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">gaining promotion when they do get jobs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The report &#8220;Black and excluded&#8221;<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">revealed that racism is rife in the jobs<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">market and has got worse during the<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">1990s, despite growing employment<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">opportunities.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">At 13 per cent, unemployment is<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">two per cent higher among black and<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">Asian workers than it was at the<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">beginning of the 1990s. For their<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">white counterparts unemployment has<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">returned to its 1990 low point of six<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">per cent. The report also shows that three out of four unemployed black and<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">Asian workers live in just three major<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">urban areas \u2013 London, the West<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">Midlands and Greater Manchester.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">Apart from Outer London<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">unemployment for Black and Asian<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">workers in these areas is running close<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">to 20 per cent.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">In Inner London the<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">unemployment rate dropped over the<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">past year for white employees, while it<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">grew for black and Asian workers<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">despite some 75,000 new jobs being<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">created in the capital.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Dealing with pay, the report shows<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">that while black and Asian workers<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">have had greater proportional<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">increases than white workers, this is<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">because they are largely in low paid<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">jobs and gained exceptionally from<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">the introduction of the national<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000\">minimum wage.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">In one of Britain\u2019s notoriously low paid sectors, hotels and restaurants, there are nearly twice as many black and Asian workers as white.Ethnic monitoring should be mandatory on employers to end the discrimination against growing numbers of highly qualified black and Asian workers whose opportunitiesfor career advancement are in decline, said the Task Group report &#8220;Qualifying for racism&#8221;. The report revealed that that 21per cent of black and Asian employees are educated to degree level, compared to just 16 per cent of their white counterparts. But despite receiving higher level qualifications black and Asian employees are facing declining opportunities for career advancement. A growing &#8220;management and supervisory gap&#8221; has grown during the 1990s between black and whiteworkers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">The report, which uses data from the Government\u2019s Labour Force Survey, also shows that proportionallytwice as many black and Asian male workers are trapped in part time jobs because they cannot get full time work than white workers \u2013 and that over half of all black males over the age of 25 in part time jobs are in this position. Being stuck in part time work further limits their chances of career advancement. Commenting on the reports John Monks, TUC General Secretary, said: &#8220;Racism is blighting the working lives of many thousands of well qualified young black and Asian people.
