Both countries entered\u00a0into direct competition in strategic zones like the Caucasus, Central Asia and the Balkans.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">However, relations began to improve with the visit of Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin\u00a0to Ankara in December 1997, followed by that of Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit to Moscow\u00a0in November 1999 and that of Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov to Ankara in October\u00a02000.
