Exploring the G\u00fclen\r\nMovement\r\n\r\nThe University of Texas - Pan American College of Arts and Humanities, in\r\ncooperation with the Institute of Interfaith Dialog, is hosting a conference\r\non the ideas of Fethullah G\u00fclen and the faith-based civil society movement\r\ninspired by his discourse: the Hizmet or G\u00fclen Movement.  The main goal of\r\nthis conference is to examine the G\u00fclen Movement from a multi-disciplinary\r\nand comparative perspective in an attempt to understand in what ways the\r\nparticipants of the G\u00fclen Movement promote global peace through educational\r\nactivities and interfaith dialogue. At the heart of this lies the question\r\nof whether such dialogue can overcome or avert the \"clash of civilizations,\"\r\npredicted by such scholars as Samuel P. Huntington, which has become a\r\nrallying cry for many on both sides of the perceived East\/West ideological\r\ndivide. The activities of the G\u00fclen Movement vary from education to health\r\nservices to disaster relief work. The chief concern for this conference is\r\nto determine how the interfaith dialogue that occurs within these activities\r\nmay serve to ease the pressures of globalization.\r\n\r\nPossible themes and questions for the conference may include but are not\r\nlimited to:\r\n\r\n* Would G\u00fclen's thought contribute to the advancement of the modern society\r\nthat would embrace a peaceful coexistence of multi-ethnic, multi-religious\r\ngroups in a democratic state structure?\r\n* Was it the pragmatic needs of the social mobilization or a modern\r\ninterpretation of Islam that shaped the ideas of G\u00fclen?\r\n* How does G\u00fclen view the compatibility of democracy and Islam in modern\r\nsociety?\r\n* How does pluralism emerge in G\u00fclen's thought?\r\n* How do the interfaith dialog activities of the G\u00fclen Movement bring\r\nG\u00fclen's thought from theory into practice?\r\n* Do the educational activities of the G\u00fclen Movement contribute to global\r\npeace?\r\n* G\u00fclen's ideas in the practice of the G\u00fclen Movement: Educational,\r\nhealthcare and financial institutions and NGOs,\r\n* Financial resources of the G\u00fclen Movement,\r\n* G\u00fclen's thought on capitalism,\r\n* A comparative analysis of G\u00fclen and other philosophers,\r\n* A comparative analysis of the G\u00fclen Movement and other faith-based groups,\r\n* Pluralism and democracy in G\u00fclen's thought and in the G\u00fclen Movement's\r\npractice,\r\n* Interfaith dialog activities of the G\u00fclen Movement,\r\n* G\u00fclen's thought on different versions of secularism\r\n\r\nAll abstracts must be submitted electronically to tbalci@utpa.edu\r\n&lt;mailto:tbalci@utpa.edu&gt;  by January 8, 2010. Abstracts should be no more\r\nthan 300 words and written in MS Word or similar rich text format.\r\n\r\nPlease include (GM 2010-last name, first name) on the subject line of your\r\nemail.\r\n\r\nAll submitted abstracts will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. All\r\napplicants will be notified by February 5, 2010. The organization committee\r\nwill select the best papers with the intention of seeking publication with\r\nan academic press.\r\n\r\nFull papers are due by Friday, March 12, 2010. Papers should be between\r\n5,000 and 10,000 words including a 300 word abstract and notes.
