\"Brzezinski\"Zbigniew Brzezinski spoke at a RAND Corporation forum on Afghanistan in a Senate caucus room on Thursday.\u00a0 His first statement was that “Withdrawal from Afghanistan in the near future is a No-No.”<\/strong> He offered no reasons why and suggested that his other statements would be more controversial.<\/p>\n

During a subsequent question-and-answer period, I asked Brzezinski<\/strong>, former National Security Advisor to President Jimmy Carter, why he had provided no rationale for his first rule. <\/strong> I asked him why such a rule should be considered uncontroversial when approximately half of Americans oppose the occupation of Afghanistan.\u00a0 I asked how he would respond to the arguments of a US diplomat who just resigned in protest.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brzezinski’s response would make Dick “So?” Cheney proud.\u00a0 He responded that it was understandable but that a lot of people are weak and don’t know any better, and they should be ignored.<\/em> <\/strong>But, he urged that those supporters of war who would criticize the president if he pulled out should be feared and followed.<\/p>\n

These are paraphrases.\u00a0 For exact wording get the video.\u00a0\u00a0Here are my notes on Brzezinski’s remarks:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. “Withdrawal from Afghanistan in the near future is a No-No.”\u00a0 He gives no reason, just takes it for granted everyone agrees.\u00a0 Says #2 will be more controversial.<\/li>\n
  2. Don’t repeat what Soviet Union did.\u00a0 Don’t Americanize the American occupation of Afghanistan.<\/li>\n
  3. Make sure NATO and anybody else willing is there with the Americans, esply Islamic troops.<\/span><\/strong>
    \nThe Three Fundamental Noes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    To Do:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Deny safe haven to al Qaeda.\u00a0 That is THE objective.\u00a0 Don’t build a nation.<\/li>\n
    2. Be sensitive to ethnic diversity while we’re building a nation.<\/li>\n
    3. Do what USSR did in crushing democratic movements in places like Poland.\u00a0 Hire natives to fight.<\/li>\n
    4. We may have to put in more troops.\u00a0 Control cities and roads.\u00a0 Undertake counterinsurgency.<\/li>\n
    5. Pursue accomodations with Taleban and Talebanlike formations.<\/li>\n
    6. Keep economic assistance flowing rather than abandoning Afghanistan as we did after the counterinsurgency against the USSR.\u00a0 Seduce the population.<\/li>\n
    7. Involve the Europeans in funding elimination of narcotic crops.<\/li>\n
    8. Be more respectful of Pakistani strategic interests in Afghanistan.<\/li>\n
    9. Engage China and Iran with their interests in Afghanistan.<\/li>\n
    10. Build a North-South pipeline to the Indian Ocean.<\/strong><\/li>\n
    11. Rename it The Vietghanipipelinistan Quagmire of Freedom.
