{"id":13727,"date":"2009-07-11T17:35:00","date_gmt":"2009-07-11T15:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishforum.com.tr\/en\/content\/?p=13727"},"modified":"2023-04-06T09:58:49","modified_gmt":"2023-04-06T06:58:49","slug":"urumqi-a-quiet-open-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2009\/07\/11\/urumqi-a-quiet-open-prison\/","title":{"rendered":"Urumqi: a Quiet &#8220;Open Prison&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>2009-07-10<\/h5>\n<p>A man contacted by RFA in Urumqi tells about his fears while the official Chinese media strive to portray a city under control and life back to normal.<\/p>\n<div class=\"storyimage\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/uyghur\/eyewitness-07102009094007.html\/copy2_of_copy_of_mosque_305.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photobyline\">RFA<\/p>\n<p class=\"photocaption\">Chinese People&#8217;s Armed Police in front of the Grand Bazaar in Urumqi, on July 9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"position: relative;\">Official Chinese media are describing the city of Urumqi as \u201cquiet\u201d following several days of ethnic violence between Muslim Uyghurs and the majority Han Chinese.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMajor streets in Urumqi seemed peaceful Friday,\u201d said the official Xinhua news agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLife back to normal in Urumqi,\u201d said a caption over a Xinhua picture showing residents buying vegetables in a market.<\/p>\n<p>But Uyghurs, who say their grievances are routinely ignored and suppressed as \u201cseparatism\u201d by Beijing, describe the atmosphere as anything but normal.<\/p>\n<p>One man in Urumqi, reached by telephone by RFA, said that for its Uyghur minority, Urumqi was \u201can open prison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Xinhua did acknowledge that \u201csecurity remained tight\u201d and that \u201csome mosques were shut on Friday \u201cfor security reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By RFA\u2019s count, only two mosques were open in Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) with a population of 2.3 million people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>White mosque opened<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Uyghur men demanded that they be admitted to the White Mosque near the neighborhood where some of the worst violence occurred following Uyghur protests, a police crackdown, and ethnic clashes that left at least 184 dead, according to an official Xinhua report.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-right captioned\" style=\"width: 305px;\">\n<div style=\"width: 305px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/uyghur\/eyewitness-07102009094007.html\/xinhua_305.jpg\" alt=\"xinhua_305\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"image-caption\">A New China News agency (Xinhua) picture showing &#8220;Urumqi residents buying vegetables at a market,&#8221; as proof that normalcy has returned to the regional capital on July 10.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The police decided to open the mosque, apparently in order to avoid yet another clash.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Associated Press, a group of 10 policemen blocked a small demonstration not far from the White Mosque.<\/p>\n<p>About 40 Uyghur men and women \u201cbegan to march, shouting, crying and pumping their fists in the air as they walked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Uyghur people are afraid,\u201d said Madina Ahtam, a woman in a multicolored headscarf, who spoke English. \u201cDo you understand? We are afraid. \u2026 The problem? Police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police \u201cpushed journalists away from the area and detained at least four foreign journalists, holding them for several hours.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nDeath toll<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>China on Saturday issued its latest casualty figures \u2013 137 ethnic Han Chinese and 46 Uyghurs. A man of Hui nationality was also reported to have been killed.<\/p>\n<p>Many Uyghurs believe that this understates the Uyghur death toll.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview on Friday with AP Television, Rebiya Kadeer, the exiled Uyghur leader, said that China\u2019s casualty toll for the unrest has greatly understated the number of Uyghur killed.<\/p>\n<p>The man contacted by RFA said that Uyghurs were currently unable to move freely around the city.<\/p>\n<p>The man\u2019s name is not disclosed in order to protect him from retaliation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot go out freely,\u201d he said. \u201cWhenever they see some Uyghur people gathering up, they are forcing them to go inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFully armed police are marching around in the street, in front of our doors. Just below my house, there are police officers, and they can break in and take me away at any time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This man seemed to express a kind desperation displayed by many in the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe heart of the Uyghur people in our land is broken,\u201d he said. \u201cWe can only ask God for help. No one is here to protect us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Foreign reactions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Overseas, The Organization of the Islamic (OIC) condemned the \u201cdisproportionate\u201d use of force in Xinjiang, according to Agence France-Presse.<\/p>\n<p>The OIC called on China to carry out an \u201chonest\u201d investigation into the clashes and find those responsible for the killings.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey&#8217;s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters that the issue should be taken to the United Nations&#8217; Security Council.<\/p>\n<p>The head of Indonesia\u2019s largest Muslim political party, the Prosperous Justice Party, called for the U.N. and Western countries to put pressure on China to stop the \u201cslaughter\u201d of Uyghurs and Han Chinese.<\/p>\n<p><em>Original reporting in Uyghur by Erkin.
