Britain has sovereignty of two bases on the island.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1963 <\/strong>&#8211; Makarios worries Turks by proposing constitutional changes which would abolish power-sharing agreements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1964<\/strong> &#8211; Power sharing crumbles amid fighting between paramilitary factions. United Nations sends peacekeeping force to help British troops patrolling the &#8220;Green Line&#8221; set up to divide the Turkish and Greek Cypriot sectors of Nicosia, the capital.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1967<\/strong> &#8211; Military\u00a0government seizes power in Greece, relations between Makarios and\u00a0the generals in\u00a0Athens are\u00a0increasingly strained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1974<\/strong> &#8211; Military\u00a0government in Greece\u00a0backs coup\u00a0against Makarious, seeking to unify Cyprus with Greece.<\/p>\n<p>Makarios\u00a0flees and five days later Turkish troops land in the north to protect Turkish Cypriot community.<\/p>\n<p>The coup quickly ends and Greece&#8217;s military government collapses. Turkish forces occupy\u00a0one third of the island and it effectively becomes partitioned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1975<\/strong> &#8211; Turkish Cypriots establish independent administration with Rauf Denktash becoming president.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1980<\/strong> &#8211; UN-sponsored peace talks resume.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1983<\/strong> &#8211; Turkish Cypriots proclaim independence as Turkish republic of Northern Cyprus &#8211; but it is only recognised by Turkey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1985<\/strong> &#8211; No agreement at talks between Denktash and Spyros Kyprianou, the\u00a0Greek Cypriot\u00a0president.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1993<\/strong> &#8211; Glafcos Clerides becomes Greek Cypriot\u00a0president.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997<\/strong> &#8211; UN-hosted talks between Denktask and Clerides fail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2002<\/strong> &#8211; Kofi Annan, the UN secretary general, presents a comprehensive peace plan involving a federation of two parts, with a rotating presidency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003<\/strong> &#8211; Turkish and Greek Cypriots cross &#8220;Green Line&#8221; for first time in 30 years after Turkish side eases border restrictions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0In referendums, Turkish Cypriots accept UN power-sharing plan but Greek Cypriots reject it. Cyprus joins the European Union, still partitioned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2006<\/strong> &#8211; Greek Cypriots endorse ruling coalition in elections,\u00a0reaffirming opposition to reunification.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2006<\/strong> &#8211; Turkey&#8217;s EU entry negotitations break down over\u00a0Turkey&#8217;s continued resistance to opening its ports to traffic from Cyprus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2007<\/strong> &#8211; Communist party quits Cyprus&#8217; governing coalition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2008<\/p>\n<p>February<\/strong> &#8211; Communist party leader Demetris Christofias wins Cyprus&#8217;\u00a0presidential election and agrees to immediately reive reunification efforts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>March<\/strong> &#8211; Christofias and Mehmet Ali Talat, the\u00a0Turkish Cypriot leader,\u00a0agree to reopen the symbolic Ledra Street crossing in Nicosia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>April<\/strong> &#8211; Ledra Street is opened for first time since 1964.<\/p>\n<p><strong>July<\/strong> &#8211; Christofias and Talat\u00a0agree enter direct peace negotiations on September 3,\u00a0with a solution to be put to simultaneous referendums.<\/p>\n<p>Source: Al Jazeera<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1960 &#8211; Britain grants independence to Cyprus under power-sharing constitution between Turkish and Greek Cypriots.
