Obama recently made the first country visit of his presidency to Turkey. <\/span><\/span>The strong parallels between Turkish foreign policy and<\/span>Obama’s new foreign policy appear to indicate a prominent role for Turkey in achieving major U.S. foreign policy objectives during the Obama administration.\u00a0 Is Turkey indeed re-emerging as a central ally for the U.S.? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Nicole Pope<\/span> is a Swiss journalist and writer, based in <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>Istanbul<\/span><\/span><\/span> since 1987. She is\u00a0co-author of “<\/span><\/span>Turkey<\/span><\/span><\/span> Unveiled: a history of modern <\/span><\/span><\/span>Turkey<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d and worked for <\/span><\/span><\/span>15 years as <\/span><\/span><\/span>Turkey<\/span><\/span><\/span> correspondent for the French daily Le Monde. Her articles have also been published in numerous other international publications <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>including <\/span><\/span>The Economist<\/span><\/span><\/span>, The International Herald Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and The Independent. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Nicole worked for the <\/span><\/span>International Committee of the Red Cross<\/span><\/span><\/span> in Baghdad (1982-83) and in south Lebanon (1983-84). She has also lived in Tehran, <\/span><\/span>Bahrain<\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span>Cyprus<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
