{"id":109215,"date":"2014-11-27T20:21:29","date_gmt":"2014-11-27T18:21:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/?p=109215"},"modified":"2023-04-06T10:20:39","modified_gmt":"2023-04-06T07:20:39","slug":"cyprus-jack-straw-accept-the-division-of-cyprus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.turkishnews.com\/en\/content\/2014\/11\/27\/cyprus-jack-straw-accept-the-division-of-cyprus\/","title":{"rendered":"CYPRUS: Jack Straw &#8211; \u2018Accept the division of Cyprus\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Jack Straw<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jack Straw, the former British Foreign Secretary snubbed by the late President Tassos Papadopoulos for meeting in the north with a Turkish Cypriot leader in 2006, is calling on the international community to accept the division of Cyprus.<br \/>\nStraw has often in the past brought up the issue of two states in Cyprus, and in an interview with Turkish news agency Anadolu in London on Tuesday he said the island\u2019s division needed to be accepted as a reality.<br \/>\n\u201cIf it had been possible for there to be a happy, united island, well, that would be the best solution, with a bi-zonal, bi-communal constitution. But the majority of people living on the island in the Greek-Cypriot part don\u2019t want to accept that,\u201d Straw said.<br \/>\nHe referred back to the 2004 referendum on the Annan Plan, which was rejected by the majority of Greek Cypriots saying the failure of negotiations was not the fault of the Turkish Cypriots.<br \/>\n\u201cSo my view is the international community should accept the reality that there is division and that you have partition,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd then these two rather small nations would be able to develop their own relationship and I think it would be a cleaner system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0<em><strong>K\u00fcfi Seydali<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jack Straw Jack Straw, the former British Foreign Secretary snubbed by the late President Tassos Papadopoulos for meeting in the north with a Turkish Cypriot leader in 2006, is calling on the international community to accept the division of Cyprus.
