Geçmiş Zaman – The Past Tense

The past form of “to be”

Past tense endings of the verb “to be” can be added to nouns, adjectives and adverbs to describe how things were. Past tense ending is –di (-dı, -du, -dü according to the vowel harmony)

 

Assimilation

-di will turn into –ti (-tı, -tü, -tu) if the last sound of the stem is ç, f, t, h, s, k, p, ş. These letters called ‘voiceless consonants’. The easy way of remembering them is to memorise this phrase “ÇiFT HaSeKi PaŞa” (a method my primary teacher taught me), all the consonants in this phrase are ‘voiceless consonants’ and when we add a suffix starting with c,d,g, the first letter of the suffix turns into ç,t,k.

 

ex; Rahat+dım      Rahattım. (I was comfortable)

Soğuk+du       Soğuktu.

Koş+dun        Koştun (You run)

 

Present Past

 

Ben   öğretmenim. (I am a teacher)            Ben   öğretmendim. (I was a teacher)

Sen    öğretmensin. Sen    öğretmendin.

O       öğretmen.                                          O       öğretmendi.

 

Biz    öğretmeniz. Biz    öğretmendik.

Siz     öğretmensiniz. Siz     öğretmendiniz.

Onlar          öğretmenler. Onlar          öğretmendiler.

 

 

Ben   hastayım. (I am ill)                            Ben   hastaydım. (I was ill)

Sen    hastasın. Sen    hastaydın.

O       hasta.                                                          O       hastaydı.

 

Biz    hastayız. Biz    hastaydık.

Siz     hastasınız. Siz     hastaydınız.

Onlar          hastalar. Onlar hastaydılar.

Negative form of “to be”

Use the word “değil” with the endings to say “was not, were not”

Sen güzel değilsin.                                                Sen güzel değildin.

O güzel değil.                                              O güzel değildi.

 

Biz güzel değiliz.                                         Biz güzel değildik.

Siz güzel değilsiniz.                                     Siz güzel değildiniz.

Onlar güzel değiller.                                    Onlar güzel değildiler.
