Bu sayimizda Kimya-Metalurji Fakultesini tanitmaya calistik. Onumuzdeki sayida bir baska fakulteyi bu sayfalara konuk etmek uzere esen kalin.


CHEMICAL AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING FACULTY

This Faculty was formed as a result the of merger of the former faculties of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering.

The Faculty of Chemical Engineering was founded on 19.9.1963 by law No. 333 to provide engineers for the newly developing chemical industries. Its staff were initially drawn from the related chairs of the Electrical Engineering and the Mining Faculties. Several chairs of the now defunct Faculty of Chemical Engineering made up the rest, the remaining joining the current Faculty of Sciences and Letters. The Metallurgical Engineering Faculty on the other hand, was established on 1.9.1976 its nucleus being provided by the Mining Faculty.

The two faculties were joined in 1982 to form the current Faculty of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering. The annual total intake of undergraduate students are around 200. Graduate studies are done at the Institute of Science and Technology.

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

Fields of Study

Laboratories

Unit Operations Laboratory

Fluids and fluidisation principles, distillation column, gas absorption, extraction (solid-liquid, liquid-liquid), evaporation, filtration, grinding, crushing and sieve analysis,dryers, batch and continuous (packed and bubble cap columns) distillations, some products in chemical reactors.

Food and Microbiology Laboratory

Food and Microbiology Laboratory Solvents, antibiotics, vitamins and some organic compounds are produced from industrial and organic wastes by using microorganisms. A fermenter, incubator, sterilizer, autoclave and other apparatus are available in this laboratory.

Mineral Processing Laboratory

Mineral Processing Laboratory In mineral processing laboratory mineral extraction and leaching from low grade ores are realised. Mainly in-situ leach methods are performed. High pressure (300 atm) autoclave of 1 liter, IR, VIS. UV spectrofotometer, pH meters, different types of shakers, leach columns are available.

Fluidised Bed Laboratory

Fluid bed systems of cold and hot type are developed for the main purpose of lignite combustion. Also roasting studies are performed in cooperation with Metallurgical Engineering department. Combustion of Istanbul solid wastes are also studied in these rigs. The biggest rig for may have as high as 200000 kcal/kg thermal output lignites.

Synthetic Fuels Laboratory

Production of synthetic fuels from lignites, oil shales and asphaltites is carried out on bench scale,using sub and super-critical solvent extraction, pyrolysis, gasification and hydrogen donor solvent extraction methods Fractionation and characterization of the products.

lon Exchange and Adsorption Laboratory

Natural and synthetic zeolites are tested for their adsorption properties. Ammonia and heavy metal ion removal from wastewater are investigated in batch and continuous systems. A high vacuum chemisorption system is also being built for the also adsorption studies on zeolites.

Fuel Analysis Laboratory

Proximate analysis can be carried out using the ovens, volatile matter furnace, muffle furnace and bomb calorimeter.Ultimate analysis, viscosity, flame point, ash analysis and similar other fuel properties can be determined using standard test methods.

Ferit Berk Laboratory

Mixed coke production from prime coking coal for metallurgical purposes is carried out on a semi pilot scale. Various lignite are investigated as additives for mixed coke production and standard tests for coke properties can be carried out in this laboratory.

Autoclave Laboratory

Three autoclavesup to 5 liters and 150 atmospheres are used for experiments that require high pressure, such as those for solid fuel liquefaction by moderate pressure extraction, super critical gas extraction, hydrogen donor solvent extraction, desulphurization and hydrolysis.

Catalysis Laboratory

Preparation and characterization of catalysts and reaction studies. Microreactors, gas analyzers, cryoscopy system, adsorption system and a gas chromotograph are available. Kinetic studies on the cracking of polymeric material and Co-oxidation.

Microbiological Laboratory

Bacterial cultivation, bacterial growth, biological control of ethane by methane oxidizing bacteria, isolation of bacteria and aerobic and anaerobic bacteria cultures.

Air Pollution Laboratory

Desulphurization of coal prior to combustion, desulphurization during combustion using natural sorbent materials and activation and regeneration of sorbent materials.

Process Dynamics and Control Laboratory

This is a new laboratory that contains a continuous water level control system, a gas pressure control system and a control loop simulator. Other control systems are at the stage of development for teaching and research purposes

Chromotography Laboratory

Application of thin layer and column chromotography for identification of natural and synthetic organic materials,following the reaction mechanism, identification and characterization of reaction products are conducted in this laboratory.

Organic and Inorganic Process Development Laboratory

Research on new utilization techniques for the renewable raw materials. Purufication processes for inorganic and organic compounds. Development of new process for production of chemicals from low or high grade minerals and other by products.

Triglyceride Oils, Coal and CrudeOil Products Test Laboratory

Determination of composition and technological properties of triglyceride oils. Analysis of soap and detergents. Test for crude oil products such as flash point, viscosity, ASTM distillation, Reid vapor pressure, aniline point. identification of pyrolysis products of coal.

Laboratory for Surface Coating

Materials Preparation of new types of organic surface coating materials and determination of their film properties such as drying time, alkaline, water and acid resistance, flexibility, adhesion, film thickness, impact test, hardness etc.

Research Laboratory for Special Mineral Processing

Purufication of wet process phosphoric acid by production of monocalcium phosphate, chemical mineral dressing of tincal ores such as concentration and flocculation, flotation of scheelite, crystallization kinetics of sodium perbor ate and other boron compounds, boron removal from aqueous solutions.

Laboratories

Raw Materials and Technologic Experiments Laboratory

Laboratory equipped with facilities to conduct investigations on metallurgical pre-processes such as grinding, crushing on etc., mineral dressing, sintering, palletizing, testing and structural examination of raw materials, direct reduction of sintered, palletized and raw materials.

Pyrometallurgy, Hydrometallurgy and Electrometallurgy Laboratory

Laboratory equipped with facilities to conduct investigations on main pyrometallurgical processes such as roasting, melting, refining, main hydrometallurgical and electrometallurgical processes such as leaching, solvent extraction sedimentation,refining electrolysis and electro-winning.

Ceramic Materials Laboratory

Laboratory equipped with facilities to conduct investigations on analysis and examination of structural and mechanical properties of green, dry and baked ceramics and refractory materials. Raw material testing facilities for ceramic and refractory materials.

Casting and Solidification Laboratory

Laboratory to conduct tests for casting sand characteristics, melting and alloying of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, semi-continuous, casting, morphology analysis of oriented and directionally solidified metals and alloys, rapid solidification, investment casting.

Non-Destructive Testing Laboratory

Laboratory for non-destructive testing of cast parts, welded joints, thickness measurements, corrosion defects, failure analysis equipped with ultrasonic testing, radiography, penetrating liquid testing, magnetic testing, eddy current testing.

Electron Microscopy Laboratory

Laboratory equipped with facilities for specimen preparation by jet thinning and ion etching, vacuum gold and graphite plating, preparation of replica and thin films scanning electron microscope with EDX facility, transmission electron microscope with 200 kV power.

Mechanical Equipment and Technologic Processes Laboratory

Laboratory for determination of mechanical properties of metallic and non-metallic materials, equipped with facilities for shaping by hot and cold rolling, hardness testing, mechanical testing by universal Instron and hydraulic machines deep drawing testing by Erichsen machine.

Metallography and Heat Treatment Laboratories

Facilities for specimen preparation for metallographic investigations, mechanical and electrolytic polishing equipments, photography of metallic structures, dilato-metric phasetransformations equipment for con ducting ageing, quenching, tempering and surface hardening investigations.

X-Ray and Phase Diagrams Laboratory

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of crystalline and amorphous materials by using x-ray diffractometry and spectrometry equipped with texture goniometer, Facilities to obtain phase diagrams of metallic and binary, tertiary oxidic systems.

Corrosion and Corrosion Protection Laboratories

All kinds of facilities for conducting electrochemical corrosion tests ;potensiostats, scan generators, interfaceble potensiostat/galvanostat and locy in amplifier capable of conducting An impedance measurements equipment necessary for standard corrosion tests.

Protective Coatings Laboratory

Facilities to conduct electroplating and anodizing experiments various power supplies, current, potential measuring and recording units, coating thickness instruments necessary for testing metallic, anodized and painted samples, equipments for quality control of plated specimens such as salt spray testing.

Instrumental Analysis Laboratory

Laboratory, mainly specialized on instrumental analysis of metals and alloys, plating solutions, metal plating and surface treatment waste analysis, equipped with atomic adsorption spectrometer, carbon and sulphur determination apparatus, spectrophotometer, automatic titration unit and polarograph.
