State charter board votes to close Beehive academy

Money matters» State governing body concludes that the school is financially unstable.

For the first time in its six-year history, the Utah Charter School Board has voted to revoke an operational school’s charter.

Beehive Science & Technology Academy in Holladay will close after this school year unless it files and wins an appeal. Any appeal would be heard by the Utah Board of Education.

The charter board, which voted 6-0 on Thursday to close the school, said Beehive doesn’t have enough students to be financially viable and is burdened by debt. The enrollment currently is 199, but the school could accommodate 250 students.

In an e-mail, Principal Murat Biyik said the board relied on outdated financial statements to make its decision and that the school plans to appeal.

“All of us were totally shocked” by the board’s decision, Biyik wrote, noting he was denied permission to speak at the meeting. “We are very optimistic that we will save the school during [the] appeal process.”

Beehive was placed on a one-year probation in February, and Biyik said the school has complied with or made “substantial improvements” on all the issues the board identified. For example, the school has addressed concerns with its special-education program.

Charter board chairman Brian Allen said the decision made him “heart sick” because he knows Beehive’s students like their school, which has a good academic record.

“At the end of the day, we had to weigh the impact to the students who go to the school against our responsibility that taxpayers are getting the best deal for their money,” Allen said. “The scale tipped toward taxpayers.”

Beehive, which serves grades 7 through 12, was founded by a group of Turkish-American scholars. It opened in August 2005.

Last fall, the charter board, after a months-long investigation, cleared Beehive of allegations the school existed to advance and promote Islamic beliefs but flagged it for poor financial management. Charter schools are tuition-free, tax-funded public schools so they must be nonsectarian.

In November, records obtained by The Salt Lake Tribune showed that the school, operating on a $2 million annual budget, had a $337,000 deficit. The school renegotiated its building lease and laid off several staffers.

On Thursday, Biyik said the deficit has shrunk substantially. Currently, the school has an income balance of $259,000 with $38,000 in the bank, he said. The difference has been used to pay off credit lines, a state revolving loan amount and other debts, Biyik said. The academy still owes money on the revolving loan, which originally was $184,000.

But if the board’s decision sticks, Beehive students will have to find a new school for the 2010-11 school year.

“It’s the most frustrating thing. I don’t know where to send my son,” said Marie Jess, whose son Jordan started at Beehive as a seventh-grader and now is finishing 11th grade. “I’ve never found a [public or charter] school that I felt compared to Beehive.”

Jess called the board’s decision “unfair.” She hopes the school, which has achieved high scores on state academic tests, stays open.

She likes the support she receives from Beehive’s faculty, who frequently send her e-mails to update her on how her son is doing.

“I felt like they personally wanted my son to succeed,” she said, “and that’s a good feeling.”

I’m glad to see that this article is getting out. I especially like the tag “Utah closes Fetullah’s School” right now the school has purportedly brought in high priced lawyers to sue the state board. I wonder where they got the money to do this? From what the articles have said Beehive Academy doesn’t have enough money to stay solvent, it is surprising that they could afford lawyers, maybe someone else is helping them….

    I dont understand

the headline is in Turkish and English, quite contrary what information provided below

all records show according to your saying positive in the news, the school is successful academically and parents are very happy and that is a school called Turkish American joint school.

    would be supporting the school

    or applauding the closure decision

are you pro-Turkish or against Turkish people including those who work in that school headteacher biyik (I believe he is a Turkish as well)

I am actually pro Turkish, but not pro Gulen. There is a big difference as you well know. Not all Turks support Gulen either, and as far as the school goes I do not support the administration as I believe they are Gulen followers.

I don`t get this double standard.
When Christians establish a secular school, it`s all kosher. Halal beyond reproach.
When Moslem Gulenists get into the business of education….it`s all suspicious. The Islamists are supposedly taking over the world.

What`s even more disgusting, is how happy the fanatical “secular Turks“are, when they see the Gulenists tripping up and falling on their faces.
They forget that unless they formally convert to Christianity, for the fanatical neo-Crusaders (ie. the Brigittes and the Pipes), they are all potential suicide bombers.

There is a private Turkish school in my town. I suspect it`s run by the Gulenists as well. We don`t have charter schools in Canada, so we have to pay for tuition.
I am hoping to send my son there.
Am I a Gulen follower. No way.
Am I an ultra-secular Turkish nationalist. Far from it.
I am not even religious. Turkish nationalism gives me the creeps. I was born and raised mostly in Canada and I really like our brand of “Lite“nationalism.
I find that the ultra-nationalist-uber-secularists share a lot more with the Gulenists, than they do with your average humanist liberal.

Why would I pay to send my kid to such a school…..
Well, for the same reason that my friend Paulo`s parents (Brazilians of Portuguese, Italian & Creole extraction) sent their kids to the neighbourhood private Jewish school. It was a good school.

And unlike the Gulenist charter schools, the Jewish school I have in mind, didn`t even attempt to be a secular educational institution. It was a bona fide Jewish nationalist, Zionist institution, where kids were taught Hebrew, Yiddish, Jewish history, celebrated Jewish holidays…etc.
Did it “hurt“ these nominally Catholic kids to be studying in a Jewish school….
    No way….
Today, they`re worldlier, better educated, more knowledgable about a lot of world events, history and politics. And above all, they`re more tolerant and accepting of all religions and nationalities.

From Alexandria to Istanbul, since the 19th century, just about every prominent educational institution in the Near East was established with the blessing and support of Christian missionary educators.

Now, when the tables are turned, the Neo-Crusaders are panicking. That can`t be. Moslems can`t be educating our youth.
Well, what`s good for the gander is good for the goose.

TÜRKCE KURAN’a DELI GIBI KARSI! Türkce Kur-an okunmasini yasakliyor cemaat evlerinde, kimse yalanlayamaz! Bir tek dini anlamda yazdigi kitap yok! KUR-AN’I KERIM CEVIRISI YAPAMAMIS!!!

Fetullah Gülen denen adam, sirtin yahudilere baglamis $arlatanin teki…

  7. Some say they are the best schools around, and some say they can’t be that good without support from global powers. Some say they serve for global peace, and some other say: “Don’t be naive they must have a hidden agenda”. I will not get into questions like “water of the mill” as they have been addressed previously. The main question I am going after is, what are really Gulen Schools? What makes them standout? How can you distinguish a Gulen School from any other public or community school?
