Fethullah Gulen: Infiltrating the U.S.  Through Our Charter Schools?
For some time we have been researching a Turkish-based Islamist movement that has a significant network here in the United States. Given Turkey’s history of secular, democratic government, and some of the remarks made by President Obama in his recent speech there, many of our members and other readers will likely be surprised by what we have found.

I suspect that even many who are well-read on the issue of Islamism are unfamiliar with the Fethullah Gulen Community (FGC), a movement a February 2009 article in the respected Jane’s Islamic Affairs Analyst labeled “Turkey’s third power.” Indeed, the article noted in its Key Points: “Turkey’s Islamist Gulen movement, while a powerful political force, is largely an unfamiliar entity to the West.”

The FGC is named after Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish imam who now lives in the United States. He fled Turkey in 1998 to avoid prosecution on charges that he was attempting to undermine Turkey’s secular government with the objective of establish an Islamic government. Since Gulen’s arrival here the Department of Homeland Security tried to deport him, but he successfully fought the effort in federal court because it was ruled he was an individual with “extraordinary ability in the field of education” – although he has no formal education training.

The FGC emerged in Turkey in the 1970’s. According to the Jane’s Islamic Affairs Analyst piece, Gulen stated that “in order to reach the ideal Muslim society ‘every method and path is acceptable, [including] lying to people.‘” This public acknowledgement of taqiyya (employing deception to advance Islam) is highly pertinent to Gulen’s activities here in the United States.

A recent article in the Middle East Quarterly by Rachel Sharon-Kreskin titled “Fethullah Gulen’s Grand Ambition” sheds light on Gulen’s background:

Gülen was a student and follower of Sheikh Sa’id-i Kurdi (1878-1960), also known as Sa’id-i Nursi, the founder of the Islamist Nur (light) movement. After Turkey’s war of independence, Kurdi demanded, in an address to the new parliament, that the new republic be based on Islamic principles. He turned against Atatürk and his reforms and against the new modern, secular, Western republic.

Sharon-Kreskin documents how the FGC, in league with Turkey’s ruling party, Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi (AKP), has been successful in gradually moving Turkey away from its secular democratic governance, towards an Islamist state governed by Shariah law, and reorienting itself toward Iran. What’s more, other evidence suggests that Gulen’s ultimate goal may well be the resurrection of the Ottoman Empire so as to reinstate the Islamic Caliph. Clearly this has immensely serious ramifications for geo-political affairs in the Middle East as well as for the continued rise of radical Islam throughout the world.

What makes Gulen particularly dangerous is his strategic and tactical means to achieving this goal. He oversees a worldwide network of businesses, schools, foundations and media outlets, with an estimated budget of 25 billion dollars. Here’s what Gulen had to say in a sermon in 1999 aired on Turkish television:

You must move in the arteries of the system without anyone noticing your existence until you reach all the power centers … until the conditions are ripe, they [the followers] must continue like this. If they do something prematurely, the world will crush our heads, and Muslims will suffer everywhere, like in the tragedies in Algeria, like in 1982 [in] Syria … like in the yearly disasters and tragedies in Egypt. The time is not yet right. You must wait for the time when you are complete and conditions are ripe, until we can shoulder the entire world and carry it … You must wait until such time as you have gotten all the state power, until you have brought to your side all the power of the constitutional institutions in Turkey … Until that time, any step taken would be too early-like breaking an egg without waiting the full forty days for it to hatch. It would be like killing the chick inside. The work to be done is [in] confronting the world. Now, I have expressed my feelings and thoughts to you all-in confidence … trusting your loyalty and secrecy. I know that when you leave here-[just] as you discard your empty juice boxes, you must discard the thoughts and the feelings that I expressed here.

Simply put, he is brilliantly and patiently employing taqiyya on a global scale, because this strategic approach is not confined to Turkey.

Here in the U.S. the FGC runs over 90 charter public schools in at least 20 states. This was brought to our attention by ACT! for America members who actually have relatives who teach in one of these schools, an illustration of the growing reach of ACT! for America’s “eyes and ears” across our country. For obvious reasons we cannot reveal the identity of our sources.

Our readers may be familiar with the numerous emails we have released regarding the operation of the Tarek ibn Zayed Academy (TiZA), a publicly funded charter school in Minnesota that is so blatantly Islamic in nature that the Minnesota Department of Education issued two citations against it and the ACLU is suing it. FGC schools appear to be very different, and reflect the Gulen’s exhortation to “move in the arteries of the system without anyone noticing your existence until you reach all the power centers…”

Indeed, the fact that so little has been written about the FGC schools here in the U.S., as well as the accolades that have been accorded the FGC as a model of “moderation” by some in our government, would appear to confirm that the FGC and its schools are doing an excellent job of heeding Gulen’s exhortation and masking their true intent.

During several discussions and emails with our sources inside FGC schools, I asked specifically if the schools promote Islam in the way that the TiZA school in Minnesota does. I was told that this was not the case in the schools these sources were familiar with. However, one particular school (and likely numerous others) appears to be in violation of state law because the school’s affidavit for its charter does not acknowledge that it is connected with a religious institution or group. In other words, those who chartered this school practiced taqiyya by hiding this fact. (Enterprising readers may want to research this with respect to FGC schools around the country. For a list of the FGC network in America and its schools, click here).

What’s more, the schools appear to be a source of recruitment for outside school activities sponsored by the FGC, such as summer camps, which would be in keeping with the pattern of recruitment of members and followers that FGC employs worldwide, according to both the Jane’s and Middle East Quarterly articles.

As a further example of the use of taqiyya, the Jane’s article gives examples of how FGC’s Turkish language media outlet Zaman runs stories with information and headlines that are missing from the English language media outlet Today’s Zaman. This practice of two different messages, one to the indigenous Islamic population and one to the West, is common in the Islamic world, and has led many in the West, including political leaders and academics, to be misled as to the true intentions of Islamists.

In building a sophisticated and well-funded worldwide network, including a substantial presence here in the U.S., Fethullah Gulen is following in the footsteps and exhortations of Mohammed, who counseled patience and deception as a means of overcoming the infidel when the power of the infidel was greater than the power of the umma, the Muslim community. In a very real sense this is as or more sinister than the frontal assault strategy of Islamist organizations such as al Qaeda and Hamas, because, like the proverbial “frog in the kettle,” we are incrementally “boiled alive” without realizing it.

For years American Congress for Truth, and now its “sister” organization ACT! for America, have been ringing the alarm bells about what is variously known as “cultural jihad,” “creeping jihad,” “stealth jihad,” and “creeping shariah.” Much of Europe and Great Britain has been Islamized through this process, a process that invariably does not lead to peaceful coexistence between Muslims and non-Muslims, but leads to Islamic self-segregation, increased Islamist militancy and aggression, and the eventual forced imposition of Islamic shariah law within the society.

The FGC charter schools in America may outwardly appear innocuous, but they are serving a greater and long-range objective of Fethullah Gulen. We in the West need to be less gullible and more discerning when it comes to the elements of “stealth jihad” within our midst.

Is this an indication of that Americans are finally awakening, or are they just lost FGC’s value because of its’ cover was uncovered? Either way, I like to say ameeen!…, for Mr. Rodgers’ observations. It is a positive development for the mankind everywhere. One hopes that we should also start questioning the evangelists who are a wide- area political organizations trying to influence and destroy the secular system with theology. Green Bishops like Fettulah Gulen, or Red Imams like Pat Robinson can only bring misery for the crowds instead of happiness. Whenever religion is used for politics, the outcome was very dramatic; Look at Afghanistan, Pakistan, Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, Israel, Former Yugoslavia and Northern Ireland. Christianist, Islamist and Judaist are nothing else but all the same body with a different mask on the face. The power brokers are required when people feel powerless. Individuals in twenty-first century has direct line connections to the Almighty even if they do not have their i-phones. It is a reality that the job of priesthood in all denominations is reduced to a no more than a mere collection agent. FG is nothing else but a very good collector who also happens to knows how to distribute it in order to influence powerless individuals and create confusions in secular Turkey as described in the article. Years ago,the Turkish intelligence reports and late investigative jurnalist Uğur Mumcu were also concluded almost the same observations.

Bravo! When are you going to write about the funds that the FG movement has and where they originated from? Turkey has known for many years that FG is funded by the CIA and is their puppet. When he applied for his I-140 visa in 2006 his attorney’s claimed:
Because of the large amount of money that Gülen’s movement uses to finance his projects, there are claims that he has secret agreements with Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Turkic governments. There are suspicions that the CIA is a co-payer in financing these projects,”
If we look at the list of Gulen’s references the top three were:
George Fidas worked at the CIA for thirty-one years.
Graham Fuller is another ex-spook who was deeply involved in Afghanistan in the 1980s, encouraged the Reagan administrationy to begin arming Iran against Iraq, and former U.S. ambassador to Turkey Morton Abramowitz.
It is said Gulen has been residing in a CIA safe house, under the protection of the CIA.
You must ask yourself, what do these people have to gain from backing the FG movement?

The American government is currently investigating Gulen’s illegal activites (by way of his charter school scam), that includes immigration fraud, discriminatory practices, and money laundering (by diverting federal and state funding).

As for Gulen being part of a CIA operation, that is absurd. I am confident that the United States government will expose this guy for the true fraud that he is.

  7. I am from Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia. Usually, I trust more Russian media rather than any other media of other countries like US, Turkey and etc., since in these countries there a lots of things being mixed. You all guys as I understood are claiming that Fethullah Gulen and his movement is a danger for the world’s peace. But the Russian politician Zhirinovsky says which is completely against what you say here. I think his words are more sensible than yours, since he studied in Turkey earlier in his life, and the notorious politician against US, which means he would speak right away if Fethullah Gulen was associated with any US agency. Actually, he speaks good about Fethullah Gulen. You can watch it on youtube:

Besides, the photo you put is different from what I saw on different sites. Here in photo, the facial expression is very stern, the eyebrows are upward, but they are not. Does it mean that you have done that on your own?

After my first visiting this forum, I have visited other sites and found completely different information about him from yours, and they were more sensible for me to accept. Here are some of them:

I don’t understand why all this hate? If he was actually as bad a person as you all make him out to be, would the US government let him reside in America? If he was a threat to American society and all we stand for, would he have even been allowed to travel to the US? If his beliefs and teachings were wrong, would the government allow conferences to be held about him? Would there be famous scholars, educators, scientists, and even Christian and Jewish clergy who promote his teachings and value him for his great contributions to humanity? It seems as if everyone is biased by the above essay about Gulen which is going around all over the internet. Why does everybody look at only one side of the story? Why only think negatively about a person who you’ve never met, whose books you’ve never read, and whose teachings you’ve never heard? Why not go to Gulen’s official website, why not read the many books he’s written? Why not see the other side’s view? Why not try to learn the truth, but instead believe the first thing you’re told?

I think that a great majority of the respondents to Steller’s story have missed the point, which is — why are there so many H1B visa holders coming here to teach, especially at such higher percentages than other schools/businesses?

My husband (who is Turkish) and I (who happens to be an American), both taught at one of Gulen’s schools; so we believe that we can offer some more insight into what is really going on inside the Gulen-run schools.

When the organization offered my husband a position in the United States, they neglected to inform him of the Tuzuk contract which required him to give back 40% of his salary (in cash) every payday. He was also required to give the organization his tax refund every year. He had two choices, either pay up or be shipped back to Turkey.

Further, when they found out that he had married a non-Muslim — American woman, they threatened and harassed us, and ultimately terminated our employment with the school.

Before terminating our employment, the President of their school region called my husband into his office and told him that they would pay for him to divorce me and would transfer him overseas to another position if he left me. The President was quite concerned about what my husband had told me about the school’s “operation,” in addition to marrying someone outside of the organization.

Although, I was considered a highly qualified teacher according to NCLB, my husband and his Turkish peers were not. With one exception, they could not speak English effectively and had many complaints from parents about their inability to communicate.

Further, when we investigated the qualifications of other Turkish teachers in a three state area (100 teachers), we found that 98% of them were under 40, male, and held nothing more than a substitute license. We also found that some of the administrators running the schools did not have any type of license – teaching or administrative.

This is not about racism. It is about our country turning a blind eye to what is going on in these schools.

The interfaith dialogue is a front. No Yahuddi Rabbi, Greek patriarch or Catholic pope endorses Islam or Gulen. Stop trying to imply that credible religilous leaders have anything to do with Gulen.

    Facts not fiction:
    1) Gulen has a 5th grade education
    2) Gulen was exiled out of Turkey for his non-secular famous speech pull up Gulen vs. US Homeland Security (they specifically indicate that Gulen has no talents worth anything to Americans.
    3) These Charter Schools in the USA are part of the world wide Gulen effort to dominate and manipulate: Interfaith Dialog, politics, military, education, and media.
    4) Gulen never leaves his 40 acre compound.
    5) His followers are blinded by this con artist, have never met gulen and will never share in his $25 Billion wealth. They are little puppets just like the poster above that continually posts the bias written Gulen web sites.
    6) Gulen Charter schools are being denied and will be closed down. An investigation is ongoing by American officials.
    7) These schools do not perform well, but they do perform marketing and Public Relations very well.
    8) THe Gulen Charter Schools are stealing millions in Tax money every year and feel they are entitled to American money and are some sort of elite club of scholars (GIGGLE)
